I'm quite new to this. As I understand, if a niche is big (too popular), then competition is high. A small niche, however, cannot generate much traffic and profit.
In your opinion, how much "Monthly Searches" in Google Keyword Tool indicate a good niche? |

For some people a niche market is where 30,000 people are searching for the product.I heard from one of my experienced friend that niche market is where 900 people searched for the product in each day.As a newbie in niche and affiliate marketing I have no more to say, hope it will tell us other people who will visit your forum. |

I've heard different opinions on this, for many though 3-5 thousand searchs a month seems to be a good starting point. This is generally what you'll want for the keywords that you are targeting - which will give you the best chance at generating organic traffic. _________________ Get You Internet Business moving in the right direction |

No one answer is "Right".
If you are selling million dollar homes you only need to sell a couple a year to live very well.
If you are selling books online you'll need to sell thousands.
Before you worry too much about specific numbers... get SEO for Firefox or SEO Quake... I use both. They are free.
Now look at not just one search phrase in a niche... but several.
Look at the top 5 results. Who are they? How long have they been around? Look at their sites... are they attractive? Are the affiliates? What are they selling related to your desire to sell.
When you do this you can size up your competition pretty quickly.
Then you can go back and look at the numbers. And the question you ask is... If I am in spot ... pick one... can I make a profit selling to this many people.
How many people can you get to click through to your site... and of those how many will take an action you want them to take resulting in a commission. _________________

You should make your niche as narrow as possible but same time have to have good profit potential too. And try this method to figure out if there is any market for your newly found niche.
First thing I would do is go to Clickbank and look for at least 4-5 books in your chosen niche, then checkout if there is any adword ads I'd say at least 8 ads. And for the main keyword minimum monthly search volume 50k or more, and go to amazons magazine section to see if there is any magazine available if there is more than 2 magazine that means there is market for it. ANother way to look at this...
is there enough traffic that you are going to be able to make regular sales? You have to determine what regular is for this niche but generally you want to get over a hundred people a day because this is the magic 1% conversion rate.
although as said above. if you are selling $19 ebooks 1 sale a day is not going to be nearly enough. However if you are using a niche for a local business getting 10 people a day might bring in $***.
Look at what you are selling in that niche and determine what your sales could be based on a 1% conversion rate and you will get an idea of what kind of traffic you will need. _________________ Business Owners Guide to Going Online What every business owner needs to know about going online |

Thanks everyone. Even 30K searches/month looks like a big niche.
How do you get to the top in search results? Will I need to write a hundred of pages of content for my website? |

Nope 30k is good. In order to rank well you need to do keyword research but not just some keywords, you need target keywords that are high buyer intention and keywords are actually converts. You don't have to add hundreds of pages on your website but what you can do is that write SEO optimized quality articles with your main keywords that you want to rank for. _________________ Affiliate Marketing explained for beginners >>

OK, going further... how many pages do you have on your niche website. I understand, the more content the better but...
In your opinion, what is the minimum for a small niche website? |

There is no set minimums pages, however you should provide your visitors with enough useful quality informations that covers all aspects of your niche and with use of proper Silo structure your website can contain up to hundreds of pages.
What is Silo, What's The Benefit
Silo basically means kept from similar items in other word you could say categorizing similar things. Example- If your niche is learning new language and someone searches on your site German It'll be look like http://German.yourdomain.com or if he or she search for English it would look like http://English.yourdomain.com
The Benefit
It'll help your site to make it easier for Search Engines to figure out what is your website is all about and helps for better ranking.
All the Best. _________________ Affiliate Marketing explained for beginners >>

| It really depends on the niche, some niches get less than a thousand searches, but the traffic are more willing to buy, compared to a niche that gets thousands of searches a day but the traffic are unwilling to splash out |

| What you are looking for in the Google keyword tool is competition as well as traffic, based on that you can judge if a niche is worth pursuing |
