Hi

I've had a few emails for advertising requests on my website, and these emails have asked how much it costs to advertise on my website.

In the past I've only done link exchanges but now that I'm getting these emails I'm wondering if I should take it on board.

How do I know what is a reasonable amount to charge for advertising? Obviously it depends on the size of the ad, how many webpages it will be on?

Any thoughts or experience on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

It also depends on how much traffic you get. From what I have been seeing when trying to purchase media on smaller sites is that it is based on impressions. You may want to look for sites like yours (same niche, same layout) and base your program roughly on theirs. Most pages have a link to their "advertisers section" which explains their fees.

Starting high is a good way of getting exactly what you want out of offering the advertisements, but can scare people away. You can however offer them lower prices once you feel them out. If you start low, you could always raise your cost to advertise and see how that impacts peoples decisions.

Either way, there is nothing to it but to do it. I'm sure someone will have better insight than mine but maybe something I have said will help.

I get my share of these requests. There are many legitimate companies that want to purchase links from sites that are ranking well.

The "trick" is to act as if you do not care if you sell the link, but you do care about their inquiry and would be willing to entertain their offer.

So you put the burden of pricing on the buyer.

Ask them point blank what they are willing to pay. If I don't get a response then I ignore them. Legit companies have a price in mind.

I have people say they want to buy one of my sites. So I say "I'm listening... what do you have in mind?".

Then they usually want to know what kind of revenues I'm generating. And I then either drop it or I ask them again, what are you offering?

It's nobody's business what my sites are making, and you shouldn't give this information either. Legitimate buyers will have a price in mind.

I charge by the month and try to get a long term commitment. I also will seed a link with a nofollow as an act of good faith, telling them to check the link to see if that is what they had in mind. Then request payment; after payment I remove the nofollow.

That's great that you have advertisers wanting to buy ads, I would do some comparison shopping, see what other sites in your niche are charging (or at least a ball park figure) and although you don't want to price too low, if you price a little lower than your competition, you may draw more interest. Good luck
