Hi everyone,

Could someone (perhaps Debs or Charlie or Allan etc....) comment on the following webhosting provider, what they're offering and prices?

If anyone is currently using this provider please also let me know your experience...

(I'm not an affiliate for this. Just genuinely looking for a great host)

Thanks

Matt

The only two things that I dislike with that plan are:

1) Their stats packages are not my particular favourites. Last time I used Webalizer, it had some lousy statistics. That may be different now... But I prefer AWStats, or Urchin.

2) I don't see anything that lists how many extra domains you can have. It appears to only allow 1 single domain (not counting domain pointers and sub-domains). This means you have to purchase a separate hosting package for each site.

The amount of bandwidth that they allow is very nice. Bandwidth and support are two of the key features to look for in hosting these days.

Hi Eric

Yeah I noticed the thing where it doesn't specify how many domains you can have on the "Shared hosting plan", but on the "mini-reseller" plan you can host unlimited domains, but the transfer and disk space is smaller, although very generous indeed!

The only thing I would check on the reseller plan is if you are allowed to buy a reseller plan, then use it all yourself. Some companies allow that, and other do not.

When it comes to web hosts, I think personal experience is all that counts - or possibly the personal experience of someone you trust.

What looks good on paper, means little.

I know nothing about this host.

Sorry,
Charlie.

Shortly, do you have more than 50000 visitors/day?
If not, is your site dedicated to downloads or does it have other server-side bandwidth intensive scripts?

If all are not, 100G/month would only be a waste of money, I guess.

Hi Gerry,

nope not more than 50,000 visitors a day, but my site is into to downloads/etc.. and could be taxing on the bandwidth...

Not many places do unlimited domains. There are actually some reasonably good explanations for this (ideally, a host should know all the domains -- parked or 'virtual' -- and review domains being added to prevent obvious spammers amongst other things)... but many hosts do offer either the option to pay to addon domains or sites that allow a large number of addon domains (a mini sites kind of thing).

Remember when you "buy" 100 GB of traffic, you're not really paying for 100 GB traffic. Many hosts throw in a ton of something they KNOW you won't use simply because it makes their package look better without actually offering anything more (since nobody uses it). It's a practice known as overselling and nearly all hosts and many dedicated server providers partake in it. It's not bad, persay, as long as the host WILL actually let you use the resources if you want to. (Law of averages -- even if one person uses it all, the 99% of the people not make up for the fact that they lose money on him).

What is your price range for what you're requesting? That could have a good deal to do with who you should go with -- remember the cheapest is not always the best (although I must say in some occassions they actually are, it's not usually the case in webhosting).

What kind of support do you need? Do you need "hand holding" -- someone who's going to be able to answer a lot of questions, or do you just need someone to answer a question well when you actually do have one?

(Edit: forgot to ask!) What kind of sites are they? Are they mostly static HTML or would your sites use a lot of CPU/memory resources as well?

You may check:
http://www.findmyhosting.com/searchresults.asp?page=1&op=1&sid=600048

If the link doesn't work, simply make a search at findmyhosting.com.

Most things can be selected (advanced search) however you'll have to look up the number of domains...
They provide uptime history and user ratings for the hosts among other things.

Price range: up to $40 per month I guess

Support: Basilly answering my emails and any problems I get, and solving them within a day or two. (If poss!)

Sites: Mainly will be minisites but one will be CPU/Memory intensive.

Thanks

Try one of the dedicated packages from 1and1 (see link below).

They offer unlimited domains, 40 gig of data, and 500 MB of bandwidth starting at $49.99 a month. They have better packages for a higher cost as well.

They offer the latest PHP, Perl and MySQL. Plus FTP and SSH (secure telnet) access.

You can pay monthly, and you can easily install AWStats on your account.

Thanks Eric --1and1 look good, their one-time $99 setup fee put me off a little... I think I may be able to get better, for example http://www.sitesurvival.com seems to offer excellent packages and even tailor to the individual needs too! Smile

Thanks again Smile

Whichever host you chooce, Matthew, be sure and ask how many sites get placed on each server. It's no bargain if they overload the servers and your site is slow or crashes a lot.

With a dedicated host, your sites should be the only thing on that server. But with a virtual host, then what Debs mentioned is important.

I have never heard of or used SiteSurvival. I know of about 25 happy people with 1and1. Both virtual and dedicated accounts.

SiteSurvival is not operating on the scale of 1and1 and never will. Personally, I'm proud of that fact Smile
