Hey guys. I am a fanatic for testing my opt-ins and tweaking my LPs, to an unhealthy degree perhaps:) however I Ihave found that my opt ins increase substantially when I don't ask for a first name, in other words just the email address. I surmise that people don't like giving out there first names, perhaps its too personal in this medium, however they will give out their emails. A strange one, to be sure but I have split tested this and its true, opt-ins increase. My list is about 50k at the minute so I plan to soley use LPs with only mail opt-ins for the next few weeks and graph my rates against what I would normally expect to see. I will keep you posted if anyone is curious

Great post!
Yes, please keep us posted. And how much difference did it make that you removed the "name" field? In other words: What were your opt-in rate before and after?
And what about the long term influence. I like to write "Hi {!firstname_fix}" in my emails. Do you keep the same conversion rate in your emails without that option?

Hi Britt,
Thanks:) I usually have an 11 - 12% opt in rate, I have seen this go over 20% now. In relation to list conversion rates, this is what I am going to test. Normally I tweak on almost a daily basis but I am now going to hold every other single variable constant and see what happens, also in my mailing without the first name fix. I have the beginnings of a theory in my head as to why this has happened but I will continue to observe and post.

Can you do that with Aweber? I thought Aweber required a name...

Yes, you can. Aweber only requires an email. Actually, as default, the name is "optional" in the form on Aweber.

Hi,
Excuse my ignorance; but what does LP's stand for?
Landing pages??
I know a few people who are doing that too and it seems to be working well, i will wait a little more before setting myself to test it too.I like the idea, very straight forward.

What percentage of your opt-ins come from gmail, yahoo, and hotmail?
Do you convert to these addresses? I know a big list sound impressive... or more accurately looks impressive but if you are capturing dead email addresses that don't convert then what's the point?
If you can't get their name now why would they give it to you later.
And more importantly who are you going to address your followup emails to?

Tips towards the landing Page:-
- Provide a clear call to action.
- Headline refers directly to the place from which your
visitor came.
- Ability to turn a clever phrase.
- Crystal clear in your goals.
- Write long copy.
- First paragraph short....
