Debbi,

I think it's important to bear in mind that the original question was how long was it before you made your first sale, as opposed to "how quickly did you build up to a liveable income" (however you define that).
The point about times changing is a good one, too. Pre-SBI many people experimented when they started out. (I still do actually, but that's another story.)
| Quote: | | Anyone getting a good ROI for all the HARD work and LONG hours it takes to do this? |
Yes. And I bet I invested a good more hours and $ learning than you did.
One day, my torturous trek to the top might be published, but until then you'll just have to trust me when I say I'm nicely on the way, and I believe plenty of other "ordinary" people are, too.
Isn't this just a mood blip you are having? I'm sure your view will improve again soon.
Hope this helps,
Charlie. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."

Debbi,
Here's frank information for you: I will be open about my site:
February was the first month full-time listed in Google, and with a few (33) good-quality incoming links. The site earned a little above USD 200 in total in February. Currently I have only published one book, but the other is soon to be published, and then double the possibilities for income. I am content with that: All my stats are all pointing upwards, and I notice an increasing amount of repeat visitors, which means I must have built some trust (very high quality content ).
For having just one month of full steam behind it, I think the site performs nicely, and I have started to think about building another site.
Why don't you place some effort in writing a couple of ebooks:
*The complete castle holiday Guide to Ireland
*Pub Guide for Dublin (including the official world's smallest pub, two blocks away from Crafton Street)
*Sports Fishing Guide to Ireland - best places and folks
*Biking in Ireland - stayovers, food and sights
*Getting the most out of a weekend in Dublin and surroundings
These books already exist, probably, but not on YOUR site, written by YOU, and not at YOUR affordable price.
And by now, you have probably read my ebook on how to do it

It?s taken me 5 months to make 80 dollars.
Part time, now I am going to do 8 hours at work, go to gym come home, and work on the internet for 6 hours each and every day for the next 4 months. This is going to be hard, but once you receive your first cheque. You then know it works and believe you can make a lot more.
This is the best forum I have ever been on and I love you all.
My family think I am dreaming. They don?t think you can earn any money on the Internet. I am here to show them a new era and prove them wrong. _________________ The world meets nobody half way. If you want it, you got to take it. |

Hey Debbi, good news! I saw an ad on UK TV last night by the Irish tourist board promoting Ireland as The Fantasy island
I figure with your similarly entitled site, you should be able to get some traffic at their expense no problem! _________________ Neil Best

You're probably right, Charlie - thanks for the insight. It was really late and it's been a challenging few days.
Thanks also to Jewel and DatabaseDesigner especially who gave such positive feedback about my site and some great leads for the near future.
There are just not enough hours in a day to do everything I need to do to really get off the ground. So time management is a crucial element of success. We all need to set clearly defined goals for each work day (which is every day for me right now , although I don't recommend that...even online business owners NEED time off.)
I have been working hard on content. And I am very particular about design. The only major drawback is the photos so crucial to the mood of my site slow down its loading time substantially, which might make visitors click back and leave before they even see the content.
Just something for other people to consider as they design their site for the first time. Only include photos if they are a primary element of your site's purpose.
I plan on submitting the site for review in that section of this forum soon. But there is a certain level of content and overall structure I want to achieve before I do that. I think alot of the constructive criticism I would get right now would mainly be telling me things I already know I need to do. Just another tip for new website reviews. If you want the review to really help your site's effectiveness, have the overall structure and a good amount of content first. Then look over your site with a fine toothed comb and ask for feedback or advice on specific issues.
As far as making your first sale, well I'm sure no-one will be surprised I'm still waiting for that benchmark. But I've only been live since January 13. And I haven't been listed with any search engines yet. I am getting traffic from Ireland forums and traffic from incoming links from related sites. So I am seeing results from those efforts.
Thanks Jewel for the forum suggestions, BTW. The ones I've been on were really general and I need more targeted forums to join.
The e-book ideas are great too. But I probably will wait till the site's content satisfies me before taking on that ambitious goal. The ideas for topics were inspiring though! Thanks!
For now, content is my focus. Like you said though, when it comes to managing my time, I should make a day or two in my week specifically for forum postings and link exchanging. Then back away from those and write content the other 3-5 days a week.
I will keep you all posted, and I hope the other newbies will do so as well. Sharing our progress with each other inspires and encourages all of us. It's so easy to feel alone when you work online ...being part of a community like this one with such great support and cameraderie is really a godsend and, I think, should be a major part of everyone's success strategy . Giving and getting help, encouragement, and support from people who share the same goals...there's nothing in any Internet Marketing Book that can take the place of the benefits of that.
Hope this helps someone...

Good for you!
Reminds me of the trouble I had years ago trying to explain to a friend what I was doing working all hours and bringing in only the occasional $10 check. _________________ Allan Gardyne

It certainly does and certainly will.
Very pleased to see that you have climbed out of the hole...

I'm sure that you realize that your goal is not that first affiliate check, no matter how quickly or slowly it arrives, but to earn a decent living on the 'net.
" Whatever the mind can conceive, the mind can achieve" who said that?
Yep, hard work, loooong hours, I'm sure that only a few of us would consider doing this for an employer, and sometimes we are bound to ask Mother is it worth it?
But you know that it is.
Keep going Debbi, you are on your way
All the best,

Napoleon Hill. It's a wonderfully inspiring quotation. I love it - even though it's wrong.
A 90-year-old in a wheelchair can imagine himself being the heavyweight champion or a world famous ballet dancer, but it ain't gonna happen.
I love the quotation because it reminds me that it's all too easy to set goals that are too low.
I came from a poor family - my father was a farmer who owned a small farm in an area that didn't get enough reliable rain - and it took me a long time to understand fully that I could earm myself a lifestyle that was hugely better than the one my parents had.
If your goal is to earn a few extra dollars a week and you think of that goal and picture yourself achieving it, your mind will be open and you'll see little opportunities which make it possible for you to reach your goal.
Having that goal helps you spot things you hadn't noticed before.
It's a bit like just buying a new car. Suddenly you spot every other car of that make on the road.
However, if you also have a long-term goal of being a self-funded retiree with enough money for a comfortable seaside home, a holiday home in a different climate, and enough money for overseas trips, your mind will be open to a completely different range of facts and opportunities.
We need short-term goals and long-term goals. If all we have are long-term goals, we don't really have goals, we just have dreams.
Rick Butts explains it all much better in an article here:
"Rick's Simple System to Set and Achieve Any Goal"
http://www.rickbutts.com/articles/
This is also a good one:
"5 Fast Tips For Taking Charge of Your Life"
http://www.rickbutts.com/articles/5_fast_tips_for_changing_your_life.htm
I don't usually spend much time thinking about motivation or inspiration. Perhaps I should. Joanna gets Rick's newsletter and sends me inspiring snippets from it every now and again.
Hope that helps. _________________ Allan Gardyne

You all have offered such great insight and inspiration. I am also very new at this business and have earned a bit with adsense, nothing yet with my affiliates, but I'm not yet showing up at the search engines (I've been live about 2 weeks). Yesterday I posted my site on the new site review forum and was offered so much wonderful criticism that it has given me all new energy to keep going. I have a lot of formatting (rather re-formatting) yet to do, and then will attack content and inbound links.
I also plan to write articles to post both on my site and to submit. This is my question.....my site is about letter writing, can anyone give me some ideas of where to submit these articles? That would be extremely helpful.
And someday, when I am a successful affiliate, I look forward to helping the next newbie.... _________________ leslie

Leslie, as a sidenote, it is against the Terms of Service of Adsense to discuss stats or earnings. You can say you earned 2 times as much as your prior month, or had 1/2 the impressions today from yesterday, but that is about it ... relative only, no absolutes.
Please revise your post to remove your earnings so you and Allan don't get in trouble with Adsense.
Thanks,

thanks Debs, for the reminder. I've read so many terms of agreement in the last 2 weeks that I've lost track of some of the details. And thanks also to databasedesigner for the search ideas. At the moment I'm fighting with frontpage.....I've updated a page that won't update with the rest of my pages when I publish. It must be time for a break.....
