I started and own http://transplantcafe.com. A facebook-like social network for the transplant community. I would like to monetize the site with affiliate programs. Do you think the same affiliate success can happen on a site like that? Any advice or articles here you think will be helpful to get started the right way?

I think that social networks have a really good monetization potential, but you have to be really targeted.
Unlike facebook, you are dealing with specific niche and less people.
Think about several things they might be interested in (it doesn't have to do something with Transplant). To know that you have chosen the right commercial- you should try a few.
Your site is still new and small, so you should try CPA programs (you will find it really hard to get payed by views or even clicks).
Join several programs, and see what is bringing the best income. Then, focus on that field.
