Post subject: To SBI or not to SBI?
|

Hi all,
I would welcome comments and feedback on SBI vs other approaches to developing websites.
I've been thinking about getting into affiliate marketing for a little while and came across SBI a couple of weeks ago. I downloaded the action guide (excellent) and have read it a couple of times now.
The analysis tools provided with SBI seem to be great (especially for someone just starting out) but I'm put off by the appearance of the sites that SBI generates when compared with what can be built using an opensource CMS.
Looking through some of the links to SBI sites I find they looks quite clunky and out of date compared to what can be achieved with Joomla or Wordpress.
My concern is that, for the niche I have found, all of my potential competitors have really slick looking sites.
So...
• Is the appearance of the site that critical?
• Does SBI do 'magic' behind the scenes that makes it worthwhile?
• Is it possible to overcome what seem to be some of the limitations of the pages SBI creates?
• Are there any SBI sites that have more of a web 2.0 look & feel?
I have yet to register for the SBI evaluation so apologies in advance if I'm making some wrong assumptions about what can be achieved. |

In my opinion the only real downside is the sites all look cookie cutter and not very professional. I come across SBI sites ranking okay now and again. They all use blocks of Adsense and they are pretty well written. But they just look like they were made in 1999.
You only get one chance to make a first impression. You can learn a lot from SBI about Internet Marketing. _________________

Hi Tim,
I tried to answer you in this thread, but just realized that somehow, while logging in, I ended up starting a new thread instead of replying here.
So, just in case you missed my answer, here it is...

Sorry about that. I do hope it helps. Sometimes the best way to cut through the endless debate is just to test SBI! with your own experience. It's the only "vote" that counts.
All the best,
Ken Evoy |

I agree with you, Tim: Many SBI sites look really out-of-date, but that's due to their current template setup. In the near future, there will be an abundance of new, cool, layouts to choose from.
In addition, in SBI, you have always been allowed to upload your own HTML, which makes your site non-SBI recognisable :-)The real value of SBI is in its tutorials (Action Guide, lively forums, etc) and the understanding of the Internet business model (which I think Mr. Ken Evoy has grasped waaayy better than so-called gurus).
I can only say this: As a computer specialist with more than 30 years on my back, I highly recommend SBI (the process; the hosting is an addon benefit). _________________ DatabaseDesigner

SBI has an option of using your own builder like dreamweaver or whatever you like. They also have custom designs and templates at reasonable rates. The designers are very accommodating. But remember a pretty picture alone doesn't sell content does. _________________ Finally... build an affiliate site that WORKS.

I would like to answer some of your concerns about SBI based on my own experience.
• Is the appearance of the site that critical?
I don't think so. I've seen some good looking sites that were full of fluff (I don't revisit them) and I seen very plain Jane sites that were loaded with valuable information (I bookmark them and visit often). My church accounting site is very plain and I would not change it for the world because it is an established site and people come to my site for information…not to look at the cosmetic beauty.
Now my basic accounting site is a different story. It just turned a year old and I have noticed a few sites in my niche with the same template, so in December when Ken releases the new 3 column designs for block builders (people like me who doesn't know how to build our own pages or use Dreamweaver) I will probably redo the look of that site...but not my church accounting site...it does well just like it is
• Does SBI do 'magic' behind the scenes that makes it worthwhile?
I think their magic is their awesome support, forums, and tools. But that is not enough to make a successful site...you got to be willing to work hard and read everything you can get your hands on to grow your business.
• Is it possible to overcome what seem to be some of the limitations of the pages SBI creates?
I do not honestly know of any limitations. You can have any site look you want. If you don't like their existing templates...you can build your own (they have instructions for that) or pay one of their "experts" to create a one-of-a-kind for you. _________________ Vickey

Hi
I know this thread is aged, but I came across it and felt some new data I have might help future readers.
You asked -
| Quote: | | • Is the appearance of the site that critical? |
Well, actually to a point, yes, but as long as a site is easy to navigate and doesn't repel visitors, you can still get traffic and NOT be a hugely talented designer.
However, since Ken Evoy knows that many people do consider this point very important, an upload your own 3 column template was recently developed. And for those of us who prefer the Block Builder software, the 3rd column is being released very, very soon. Days in fact. So this point has been thoroughly updated and you can now tweak, design and create whatever you wish with SBI.
Just don't forget to write the content, because that's the part the REALLY matters.

I think so. It's like there are worker elves in teh background, pushing your pages to the top of the search engines. But I have no proof. And after all, elves are mythical creatures. :0)

I'm not sure what you mean by limitations. But there is something called Infin It! If you're an advanced programmer and want a section of your site to do something (say have a membership area, etc.), you can plug that in there. That's why it's called Infin It!, because you can do an infinite number of things with it.

Check out results dot sitesell dot com to view a list of SBI sites that are in the top 1% online. Some are very modern looking, others aren't (which proves that looks aren't everything).
But with the new 3rd column, I think very shortly, we'll start to see more advanced-looking sites being created by even the newest SBIers.
