I think promoting similar products in one blog is okay, but the problem would arise when they actually come from competing companies.
And if you're into affiliate marketing, you should deal less with Google Adsense since you can't control what ads show up. It may show ads from the competing network and that would mean a loss/distraction in your sales.

Sticking to one product would be a bad idea - how would you be able to compare its performance with another, similar product if you only promoted one?
Sticking to one type of product, especially when you're starting out, would be a pretty good idea.
