Post subject: .com vs. .net or .info
|
|
|
I am looking for domain names, and wanted to know if anyone feels they lose business because they use a .net or .info url.
It's no secret that most of the good, short .com urls are used, but should I spend the next two weeks trying to rack my brain for something people will remember that is relevent to my topic? -or- should I take the available .net or .info that fits my topic?
I have to admit that if I see a company that uses a .info or .net, I tend to automatically think the company is not legit. I don't know, maybe it is the years of .com this .com that. The only successful .net that I ever remember is earthlink.net. I mean, think about it, when you tell people your url, don't you usually drop the www's from your addresses, and most of the time you probably drop the .com. It just seems as if it is assumed.
What do you think?
Your input is appreciated. |

I think it all comes down to how much you expect to rely on word of mouth referrals or people's memories for traffic...
If you rely on the SEs, .com is certainly not important. But I'd always go for .net (or even .org) before .info, even if it's personal choice rather than SEO efficiency.

I might rush over the "http://www." part if I'm speaking, but I never drop the .com. (When writing it's the whole lot.) If you miss off the .com you're asking for trouble, if you ask me.

Maybe it's a geographical thing. Where I live, it's a toss up as to whether .com or .co.uk is the default for a UK-based audience.
Just a thought,
Charlie.
P.S. Do as search. There's detailed threads on this, as Phil mentioned. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."

Hello,
I read that SEs rank com domains higher than info and net so I'd suggest you stay with com. Also if you want people to remember your domain then I'd suggest you stay with com also.

Not sure where you read that but it's not correct. If the search engines were going to favor particular extensions, it would be .org, .gov and .edu because most people are searching for information.
It doesn't matter what the domain extension is - all that matters is the number and quality of your links.

I agree to an extent. Don't underestimate the intelligence of your visitors but a .com or .net will make things easier for them.
Cheers

if you have dot something, and your competition has dot com, they will benefit from your advertising $$$.
If your competition does NOT have the dot com equivalent of your domain name, then it shouldn't be much of a problem. You'll just have to emphasize the dot something,so they will be less likely to misstype it.
