Hi guys,

I need some advice here. I'm doing a website for a client who sells electronic cigarettes. The problem is, there's not enough search volume to optimize the site using "electronic cigarettes" and other related terms. The adwords tool churns out "not enough data" in almost all the e cigarette phrases.

Since its a device to help people stop smoking, I tried to use the keywords however, FDA will not allow us to use the term "quit smoking" and other "stop smoking" phrases because they are still conducting further studies on the product. I'm running out of keywords. What shall i do?

Hi,

The "Global Monthly Search Volume" is about 49,000 searches for "electronic cigarettes" in July. Although it shows there isn't enough data for "Local Search Volume: July".

I should think that if you are trying to optimize the site for local clients then it is not worth it in my opinion but if your client is going to be selling to a global customer base then I think you should definitely optimize the site for a global audience.

Using the free Word tracker tool http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/ returned "646" searches for electronic cigarettes. I also tried "electronic cigarette" and it returned "1229" searches which is very good.

Mostly I base my demand for a keyword using both word tracker and google keyword selector tool.

So in my opinion you should definitely optimize your client's site for "electronic cigarette" as the demand is pretty decent.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Dan..Yes, its a very good catch but the problem is, its got almost 12,000,000 sites competing for it. "electronic cigarette" has about 700,000.

Some niches are not going to be easy to break into. Try Car Insurance or Car Rentals on for size.

So you choose the best words you can find and then you figure out how to out compete those who are ahead of you.

Somebody is ranking for those terms and it is not a trademark.

So if you want to keep your client you figure out how to rank for the more competitive terms.

Clients pay for SEO services for the products they sell, and sometimes it's a real battle to rank. So the real question is how can you work with what you have available to you?

You could always manage a CPC campaign for your client.

I have tried almost all related keyterms but they all have the same result in Google adwords - "not enough data". The only ones which were available contained "quit smoking" terms. Sadly, we're not allowed to use it.

Pls tell me what you think of this suggestion. I will create a separate wordpress site about "quit smoking" with niche keywords that have low competition and high search volume. Do some on page and off page link stuff and other seo tricks, get it ranked high and lead all the readers to the client's money site. This way, FDA won't sue us for mentioning the "stop smoking" terms cos its got nothing to do with the client's product. Replicate this with other blogs and article marketing. Will this work?

Interview a dozen smokers. Ask them if they would relate an electronic cigarette to a quit smoking campaign?

There is plenty of search volume for electronic cigarettes. I know because I've done the legwork.

http://www.internetmarketingiq.com/huge-affiliate-opportunity.html - the admin can remove this if they find it not relevant... This is a very specific post about the Market for Electronic Cigarettes.... including research quotes like this one.

Quote:
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Gallup first asked Americans about their smoking habits more than 60 years ago, and recent Gallup polling finds Americans reporting among the lowest smoking rates ever measured (24%). The percentage of Americans saying they have smoked cigarettes in the past week did not drop to approximately one-quarter of the population until the mid-1990s. Gallup has asked respondents in more than 90 countries around the globe a similar question regarding their smoking habits, and the data indicate a median percentage of 22%. This result is statistically similar to the U.S. rate, but in some individual countries this figure ranges from a fraction of the U.S. responses to more than 40%.

But the point is that the market is there, the keywords are there, but if you want to find them you are going to have to look beyond Google.

Look at industry research about smoking in general. The numbers are PHENOMENONAL.

Most of the people I know that smoke could care less about quitting, what they care about is the Health Concerns. They do NOT want to quit... but they would like it to be safe.

So that is the real angle. So again will Quit Smoking campaigns reach your target audience and keep your SEO Client happy?

You often have to look beyond just keywords when you are researching customer behaviors.

Thanks IM,

Electronic cigarettes itself has indeed a very large search volume but the competition is likewise staggering but you're right about the other angle. It's true smokers never want to quit but they just want a way to ease the effects of their habit on their health.

it seems to me that this is actually a good thing. Since you are entering a low competition field, you could go online and type in a few words related to electronic cigarettes and see what pops up. You can then try to match the titles that pop up but add some of those keywords you already have to make a longtail keyword. Either way, you will be fine because the market is small and you don't have much competitionn. Ya know. I tried this when I was selling PLR articles which is a very small market.
