Having a website can be a very successful endeavor if done right.
There are a number of things you need to consider before launching the site.
Also, in its most basic form, the best way to approach the launching of a website is the following:
1. Identify your market and determine your demand. This is achieved with market niche applications.
2. Once your demand is identified, specialize in a specific market.
3. Develop the website and identify what you want to offer so you can consider what programs or features you want to include in your website. Most websites that are very successful get to become an online community where customers keep coming back for more. Some testing may also be required before launching the site to see if the programs are working properly.
4. Make sure your content is relevant to the service or product you want to market or promote, and that it increases the customerīs curiosity to use or buy your product or service. Content is key.
5. Develop the website so it is search engine friendly and looks professional. Rankings in search engines tend to operate differently depending on the search engine you list the website in. This is not necessarily that expensive if you use a combination of resources to develop the site. You can manage and use programmers or hire affordable website services. Both have pros and cons.
6. Determine what online marketing strategies you want to use and prepare your internet marketing campaigns accordingly.
7. Execute your marketing campaign and measure results using special software.
8. Observe the competition and see what works and what does not. This can also be achieved with an online application.
This, in its most basic form, is the way websites are developed and managed.

Great Post with some very useful information.
One thing that I would expand upon is the content of the website. You need to make sure that you have relevant and useful information for your viewers, such as articles and reviews.
This will keep people coming back and gain their respect. Not to mention that the search engines will love you.

Can't agree more with Glen, Content is the heart of of everything. You can have the best looking web site on the internet that is SEO'ed to the max but if the content is bad you will never get any business.
