Social media marketing is the process of promoting your site or business through social media channels and it is a powerful strategy that will get you links, attention and massive amounts of traffic.
There is no other low-cost promotional method out there that will easily give you large numbers of visitors, some of whom may come back to your website again and again.
If you are selling products/services or just publishing content for ad revenue, social media marketing is a potent method that will make your site profitable over time.
Those who ignore the efficacy of social media usually fall into three categories; the ones who don’t know much or anything about social media, the ones who are interested but don’t know how to use it and those who don’t believe in the value that a social media strategy can bring to any site or business.

I'm still not convinced that social bookmarking is a good way to get traffic/sell products.
There's no doubt about it that it's important to do if for building backlinks and improving your visibility for search engines.
In sying that, it seems like some of the Twitter strategies are working quite well for getting traffic, so if anyone has experience with this, I'd like to know |

I have a Twitter strategy which I like to call 'Fishing'
I use a free website which will send out a direct message as soon as someone starts following me. It also automatically starts following people who follow me. You simply set up this direct message to include your link to your website. Everyone who starts to follow you will be sent your link.
This is where the 'fishing' comes in. You do a seacrh for a keyword thats relates to your site like 'make money online' or affilaites. This will bring up all of the tweets with those keywords. Just go down the list and start following people. I find that most people will follow you back. Look for people who have an equal number of followers to the number of people they are following. If someone has 3000 followers and they are following only 25 the chances are they will not bother to follow you. When they follow you back they will get sent your link in the direct message and they will also receive your future tweets.
With this method you get free targeted advertisng.

I think it won't be long and twitter will be the next myspace. It's now starting to be dominated by marketers and that will kill it IMHO. The question is what will the next "twitter" be?
