Hi guys,
When do you use a subdomain and subdirectory? Which one would be better for SEO?
If i wanted to add a subdirectory to my wordpress blog, do i need to install a new database to the new folder? |

I've always thought that both would not affect how you are ranked. So it really doesn't matter _________________ Online Marketing Made Easy

Depends on what you are trying to do. If I want my blog to appear as a separate site - because the content is so much different - then I'll use a subdomain. Otherwise I'll just use a folder. This applies to blogs and websites. Although I generally pick tight niches and targeted keywords in my domain names so I don't want a lot of subdomains sharing the address.
SEO ... good question. It's hard to say really. There is some belief that while neither is better specifically than the other a subdomain may be looked at more like a separate site. So if your niche is baby strollers and your main site is about babies then I'd say use a folder. If your main site is about educational books then there may be enough of a difference to warrant using a subdomain.
I'm currently testing it (More for organizational reasons than SEO) and thought the content for my project was different enough to warrant a subdomain.
Example: "http://www.internetmarketingiq.com/" "http://themes.internetmarketingiq.com/" Quotes added to deactivate hyperlinks.
Something else to consider... you can have separate accounts for Google Analytics and stats for subdomains.
So do what makes the most sense organizationally for your project. _________________

Appreciate the reply guys. It seems that subdomains appear to establish a different separate site from the main domain while subdirectories give an impression that it's still part of the main site.
So for a site like cheaplaptops.com, i can have subs such as cheaplaptops.com/bags, cheaplaptops.com/prices and so on.
And for a subdomain, it can become Mac.cheaplaptops.com or Dell.cheaplaptops.com
Am I right? |

I use subdirectories for my blog and it doesn't affect the SEO of the page. It ranked well in search engines so I am sticking to it.
As you have written, you can have those subdomains as it is of different topics and can be static as they should because you are talking about prices and other related topics. _________________ RUSH Delivery Within 24-48 Hours!

Subdomains are used to divide websites into different sections. Usually the subdomain is a descriptive name placed before the main domain and it is preferred by SEOs... _________________ hydraulic valve || seo packages |

From a branding standpoint a subfolder is easier to remember. Generally people aren't used to blog.domainname.com much easier for them to use domainname.com/blog _________________ Business Owners Guide to Going Online What every business owner needs to know about going online |

I enjoyed the information on subdomains vrs directories or folders. I have never used subdomains but use directories a lot.
When I see a subdomain I associate it with the domain or consider it an additive to the main domain. I also consider folders as an additive to the main domain. To my way of thinking it won't make any differance, subdomain or folders with SEO or customers. |
