Post subject: Depressed -- Lots of Backlinks, No Updates at All

I was, and still am, very excited about the content site approach to affiliate marketing.
I know a lot has been going on with Google lately and I agree their results pages are looking really nice.
However, in three months they have not updated any of my new content sites. They spidered once and have not touched them since.
3 months without any updates is effectively death for a new content site venture. I think it's sad that a concept as meaty and full of promise as this one can be killed by a search engine that owns most of the Internet traffic but is apparently not in a position to update any content (except for the bigger, pre-established sites).
Well, I've complained and moaned, and I guess I'm done. Thanks for listening. _________________ - blake

They are, and post Austin, Google traffic has dropped to almost nothing, which would be okay if Google would also pick up new pages within a few months (site content has at least doubled since they last came by).
I have articles pointing to these sites all over the place, plus lots of standard backlinks; the home pages are refreshed pretty regularly with new content added to the site map *and* the index page, but Google will not update them. _________________ - blake

Hi Blake
Your domain name site appears to be fully indexed. Your prom dress site has a few links to it but they are all new as far as I can tell - articles listed in February. Your other two sites seem to have only one link to them each.
Google will crawl pages every day if you give them a reason to do it. So, you need to get the home pages to a PR of 4 or above and update them everyday. After a while, they'll visit the pages everyday but until the PR is high enough, they won't think the sites are important.
Now, your domain name site does have links to it (a lot from DMOZ) and it's PR is showing as a 4. That's probably why the site is pretty much fully indexed. I would recommend that you use that site to help out your others. You don't need to link to your other sites from every page or anything like that but you could set up a page that links to your other sites (maybe an "About Us" page).
This will send them some more PR (probably enough to get them fully crawled). Then, keep updating those other sites and keep looking for links. It's an ongoing process and, to be honest, can get a bit tedious but it's worth it in the long run.
For example, my home page gets crawled pretty much everyday. I added a new review on the 18th (SpamBlitzer). If you search both Yahoo and Google my home page is in the top 10 for the name of the product (the actual review should show up in Google but I just checked and it's gone missing).
This is one of the benefits of increasing PR and updating regularly - the SEs will visit regularly.
Hope that helps.
Cheers

Thank you for giving me some new things to try, Sean. I'm so frustrated I could chew my foot off. It sounds like it's not impossible to get crawled, though, if you know what you're doing (and someone who knows what he's doing is talking to me, thank god). Slogging on!
Thank you again, I really, really appreciate it. _________________ - blake

Hi Blake
Glad to help. BTW, your sites look great so they should do well.
Basically, getting links should be a part of anyone's marketing plan. I actually don't like searching for other sites to exchange links with - I much prefer the article option. So, my marketing plan includes writing one article per week per site.
It's usually pretty easy to get articles on other sites. My goal is for each article to be included on 20 sites (including article directories). This means that I will have over 1000 new links to each site in 12 months. Most won't be overly "valuable" links but they all add up.
If you like writing then set yourself a goal - it doesn't need to be one a week. One a month would still be helpful.
Long term, it'll really pay off.
Cheers

Hi Blake,
Here's another reason for adding new content and getting more links to your sites... Yahoo's new spider is out there exploring sites. I've seen it showing up in my logs. _________________ Allan Gardyne

Sean,
I really like your style; it's confident and valuable. Thank you. As a subscriber, I enjoy your newsletter. What I really mean is: Not bullish, but honest,
Enough commercialism, though I absolutely agree with your advice on content writing and sharing (submitting it to other sites): Probably the best traffic generating tool you have.

Blake,
Google isn't the only answer! Now that Yahoo! has split, so to speak, with Google's SERPS, they have lost a lot of the market share for search engines.
What does that really mean? It means Google only has a little over 30% of the market share and Yahoo! has around 25%!
So I would also try optimizing your site(s) for Yahoo!'s indexer (also know as the Yahoo! Slurp)
Link popularity is going to be key to getting your site to the top of the search engines. Don't get me wrong about "Content is King". But without other sites linking back to you its like the game of Golf...You could be great at the long game, but what about using your putter.
Paid inclusion is also the way to go. I know Inktomi, Yahoo!, AltaVista, Fast are just a few that do paid inclusion.
I hope this helps! _________________ 2009 Insider Secrets

Thank you again for all the good advice. Seth was right, I put a link to my sites from another PR 6 site and Google came along pretty quickly to re-index, thank heaven.
I also want to say thanks to Seth for the solid advice on article writing, on which I'd been slacking because it's hard work, LOL. I put out an article a few days ago and today I got notification that it's going out to 13,000 subscribers tomorrow. I would NEVER have gotten on the article track without this site.
I know I'm not growing as fast as I would with SBI, but it's going a lot better than it would without your help here. THANKS! _________________ - blake
