For blogs with low traffic, I find that another method works better.
No 125x125 banners at all.
Some AdSense, yes, and then choose one affiliate product at a time and write an entire blog post about it.
Inside the post, it works wonders to have a picture of the product, whether it's a virtual one (most vendors offer a virtual book cover, cd-cover etc.), or a physical product.
