Post subject: Help ! ..A Keyword Query - What's My Real Competition ?
|
|
|
Hi all,
Can Alan or anyone help before I go mad ?..
I do hope this is not a dumb question
On a previous thread, Alan explained how to
find the amount of competitors that are using
the exact same keywords.
Example Keywords - Stop Smoking Now.
Doing a broad search on Google it shows the
competition number as 5,580,000, and when I
do a search for the exact keyword phrase by
using qoutes "Stop Smoking Now", it shows
the competition as 82,600.
I understand that 82,600 sites are using the
exact keywords so this is the competition,
right ?...But, when people search, they will
always do a broad search so even when they
use this exact keyword phrase they will still
come up with 5,580,000 !
Let me put it another way...
If you do a search using "Stop Smoking Now"
on Google and your website that contains
these keywords is listed in the top ten of
Google, you still won't get any traffic. You
will only get traffic when it appears in the
top ten of Google after doing a broad search
whether you use the exact keyword phrase or
not.
Am I missing something here ? I would very
much appreciated some help.
Thank you for listening to me.

Never worry about that. It will just slow you down.

Yes, 82,600 PAGES are using that exact phrase.

Yes, but the vast majority of those pages are NOT your real competition because those pages are not optimized for that phrase. They just contain the words "stop", "smoking" and "now" somewhere on the page.

It's true that if you do searches with and without quotes, the pages that appear in the search results can vary.
Your toughest competitors will be the ones who have optimized for that phrase. The vast majority of the apparently competing pages won't be doing that, so you don't need to consider them serious competitors.
When you say 82,600 pages are using the exact phrase and they're your competition, what you need to know is how many of them are SERIOUS competition. How many of them use the exact phrase in the title, in the heading on the page, a few times in the body, and in links on the page, and in links to the page? How many of those pages have more than 20 links to the page? How many of those pages have a PageRank of more than 3 or 4?
A complicating factor... Some well established sites have many thousands of links to them, are regarded by Google as authority sites and have high PageRank. Such sites can be extremely tough competitors. If there are 10 of them in the top 10 for the phrase, bad luck!
Hope that helps more than it confuses. _________________ Allan Gardyne
