I heard that it is not worth competing with Keywords which have a VERY high search volume in the search engines(eg Golf =564,000,000 pages/searches in google) , but use keywords which have a lower search volume.

eg. golf clubs

But when looking for the ideal set of keywords to use, which dont have much competition, what types of volumes should we be looking at, approx?

Eg, When starting you should consider keywords which have a search volume of 20,000 only..... then consider higher searched keywords after you have build up on these ones..... so what amount of search volume - (in google search for eg) should we be looking at, when considering keywords?

Hi Eyes,
I honestly don't think it possible to give any sort of exact figure.

It depends.

For starters the search volume is only one factor. 10,000 searches a day on a keyword phrase with only 500 competing pages is pretty good. On the other hand, 10,000 searches a day on a keyword phrase with 120,000 competing pages is obviously not so good.

A keyword phrase with a search volume of 1000 a day may be a poorly searched word in one niche and a very highly searched word in another Smile

As for an ideal set of keyword phrases I'd suggest going for a mix of high volume words with reasonable competition and some 'low hanging fruit' - keyword phrases with a fair search volume but with not too much competition.

You will need to wait it out with the high volume words whilst you get plenty of good deep inbound links. In the meantime the 'low hanging fruit' will bring you some traffic.

I've done very well selling real products with keywords with under 1000. It zeros in on the real prospects for what you are offering.

Also, they are usually way less expensive if you are paying for them.

The real trick to keywords is not just finding out how many people are searching them, but figuring out which phrase the people are using when they are in fact "READY TO BUY".

The average guy searches then looks at the top 3 or 4 links... sometimes the top 10. If they see keywords that match what they are looking for they click.

They go to the site. If they find what they want then they are set. If not they go back and maybe click a few more. But it's more likely they will just do another search modifying their original search query.

If you understand this behavior you are that much closer to making more money.

Now you have to look at the niche you are working.

If you are selling Cell Phones you may have a buyer looking for a replacement phone, a battery, a charger, a ?

They may start by typing in "Cell Phone"... then go to "Cell Phone Battery" then maybe "TMobile Cell Phone Battery" or "Nokia Cell Phone Battery".

Then they find that they need a particular model of battery. So they then search for that model, now they are price shopping. And now they are getting ready to buy.

The keywords they use on the "long tail" are the keywords that convert.

Now stepping back.

If you are a huge company with a big budget. You bid the Entry Keywords because you are marketing your brand.

I have been working with affiliates for the golf programs; and those campaigning through search engines are getting great success particularly in target keywords like location specific, special deals, etc.

The advantage here is that those who are searching through google using lower volume keywords are most likely to convert as they know specifically what they want.

Learn about keyword match types. And keywords should define the product or idea. So that you can get the worth of your keywords.

As it is because it is too competitive among the big players. Zoom down to the specific keyword will help to get what your customers want. Always think what your customers will use when they search.

Your market can be highly competitive but within that market you need to identify some nice. What does it mean is that you need to break it done. If your keyword are too large, you will have a hard time to be ranked and found. Also at this stage people might be doing a broad search and are not ready to buy. The more specific you are the more cahnces you have to find buyer.
Some good niche would be at least 80 searches a day and less than 30000 competing pages. This is to start with then you will need to analyze it further to see if there is a market and if people are buying, ususally PPC cost is a good indication.

Keyword plays important role so you have to find the keywords which are more related and which the visitor always uses it, so this is the best idea to increase the keyword popularity.

Targeting specific keywords that people use when they're in a buying mood makes very good sense.

Are you in this for the long haul?

If you are, I think it makes sense to use a mix of very competitive, competitive and much less competitive keywords, especially if those words would tend to appear naturally on your site anyway as you write articles of value to your visitors.

Remember, you can also include a competitive keyword as part of a longer, less competitive key phrase.

Let's say you target "best golf clubs" on a page. You may not rank well for that phrase, but you'll probably find that you accidentally rank well for some obscure golfing related phrases that appear on the page.

To start with, you'll probably rank well only for obscure, non-competitive phrases. So it helps to have lots of pages.

As your site matures and you add more good content and get more good links to it, you should gradually rank higher for some of the tougher phrases. If you stick at for a few years, you may be pleasantly surprised how well you rank for some good phrases.

When you're starting out, you may find it satisfying to target some very obscure phrases and see if you can rank No.1 in Google for them. That way, you can prove to yourself that you know what you're doing. Then you can gradually aim higher.

In search engine keywords are more important than any other, so we have to be very careful about the keywords and it should be like give the idea about the website.
