Post subject: What are the Benefits of multiple domains? ?
|

A few marketers have suggested having multiple domains, for different parts of the SAME business. What is the real benefit in this?
and can you suggest ways in which it can be used to your advantage, for an increase sales, increase in opt ins, etc?
eg,
1)www.Mysitee.com
2)www.mysitee-newslettwe.com
3)www.mysiteeSecrets.com
How could multiple domains of the SAME business of ours, be used for our benefit, to increase our profits?

The only thing that occurs to me is that it might enable you to dominate more of the first page SERPS than otherwise. So, instead of securing positions 3 and 4, you might get positions 3,4,6 and 7.
But it's pretty unorthodox. I've never seen anyone actually doing this. Normally if people want to host parts of their sites separately, they use subdomains:
www . mysite . com
newsletter . mysite . com
secrets . mysite . com
etc.

I dunno. Really, I don't.
I will say this.
There are at least 47 billion theories like this floating around the webmaster world.
It's pretty easy to make oneself insane, and waste tons of valuable time, trying to keep up with all different schemes folks come up with.
Many of us would be well advised to replace all of these strategies with just two words.
Content.
Links.
Or, if we want the fancy version...
Lots and lots of quality content!
Lots and lots of quality links! _________________ The best nature on the Net, delivered to your inbox.

It's what we've done, for different sections of our business. For example, in the Internet marketing field, we own...
AssociatePrograms.com - affiliate marketing
PayPerClickSearchEngines.com - PPC stuff
KeywordWorkshop.com - keyword research
SpeedPPC.com - our PPC product
LifetimeCommissions.com - the name says it all
LifetimeCustomers.com - promoting one product
MarketingFanatics.com - a blog
... plus more planned
They're all just different aspects of one business.
We could have just used sub-domains. However, after years of doing this stuff, I like the idea of having different sections hosted in different places. It's a way of spreading the risk.
Also, I think it lessens distractions. For example, if someone has keyword research on their mind, when they go to KeywordWorkshop.com they're not distracted by other parts of the business.
We have different email lists for the different sites. For example, if they sign up for the keyword research email list, they know they're going to receive only info about keyword research or very closely related stuff.
Also, where appropriate, you can interlink these websites, using one to promote another, as longer as you don't overdo it.
As Warburton2 says, there can be SEO advantages. It doesn't happen as often as I'd like, but occasionally we're ranked 1, 2, 3 and 4 in Google for a particular search. That's nice!
We've done major revamps of AssociatePrograms.com and PayPerClickSearchEngines.com. That was a huge job. It would have been an even larger, tougher, more complex job if we had all sections of the business on one domain.
Sometimes I feel we've spread ourselves too thinly, trying to do too much at once. However, if you do a variety of things, you can watch and see what works and then concentrate your attention on the things which work best.
It's a bit like investing in shares. One theory is that you diversify and spread your risk. A contrary theory is that you put all your eggs in one basket and then watch that basket VERY carefully.
As Phil says, there are lots of theories. We could have just used sub-domains. Perhaps if we'd done that our results would have been better. I don't claim that the way we've done it is the best way, but it's worked well for us.
Another reason I just thought of... If you ever want to sell one section of your business, it's going to be much more attractive to the buyer if it has its own domain name. _________________ Allan Gardyne

I like the concept of having different domain names also.
I know there's a lot of controversy over interlinking between sites, but it's worked pretty well for us. I have one huge main site and about 135 different sites that link to it but are distinct topics that stand on their own. As Allan pointed out, these could also be sold separately if I ever decide to do that.
You can publicize that additional site are related to your main site and make the look and feel the same..or not.
I don't think I would ever do subdomains. I just can't see much benefit in doing that. |

Hello Friends........
The prevalence of multiple domain hosting has allowed individuals to administer a number of different web sites. Some are professional web designers who create and manage sites for clients. Others have found that owning multiple domains is good for generating traffic and revenue. Multiple domain hosting gives you a way to consolidate resources by hosting a number of sites conveniently from one location

One of the advantages of multiple domain is that the computer host is shielded from the occurrence of a network failure. With systems that make use of a single IP address and connection, the failure of the connected network means that the connection shuts down, rendering the finish process ineffectual as far as connectivity to the Web is concerned. _________________ fendall 1000 |
