It took me a long time to figure out how to use blogs successfully. I really like the dynamic aspects of blogging and once it's set up I have a nice platform to talk about anything new that goes on.

Here are some tips:

- Use Wordpress... it just keeps getting better.
- Host your own blog... then you are not at the mercy of blogging sites.
- Create a publishing schedule... and stick to it.
- Make sure to tag your posts... I use the Simple Tags plugin for this.
- Use Feedblitz for email subscriptions... it automates updates.
- Use software for quick, high-quality "utility" posts... great time saver.
- Use software to automate trackbacks... manual trackbacking is a pain.
- Join MyBlogLog and participate in the community... plus it tracks traffic, pages viewed and click-outs
- Submit your BEST posts to Social Marketing sites (again, use software to make it quick and easy)... make sure the content is worth it or the visitors won't stick.
- Promote your blog by using article marketing, commenting on other people's blogs, etc... making blog post in and of itself is not enough.

I try to keep this in mind... The actual blogging part should only take about 20% of my time. Then the other 80% should be used to promote the blog using off site tactics.

Hope this helps.

Blogging can be great, provided you have good content on it. I have often been to many blogs that have seen zero visitors on it for a month at a time.

The #1 thing that you can do to increase blog traffic is to provide an RSS feed to it. An RSS feed allows people to automatically get any new content you put on your blog, usually downloading it into something like Google Reader.

Providing that will allow you to get repeat customers to your site, which in turn will be good for your business blog.

Hope that helps. Smile

Yes, I think blogging is one of the best ways of marketing.

You do have to do it regularly (I blog at least 4-5 times a week). It takes a while to build up traffic, but if you use well-researched keywords, provide useful information and links to your website it will reward you in time.

You can also put adsense and other adverts/links on your blog.

If your content is good and provides information that people need - you will build up trust and confidence. This is what makes people buy from you.

You can also notify a ping server that you have updated content by going to their website and submitting your blog's name and URL. You'll need to do that if you use a Blogger blog.

One popular ping server is PingOMatic, found at:

http://pingomatic.com/.

When you ping PingOMatic it notifies a number of search engines that your blog has been updated. Many of these search engines also have their own ping server as well.
