Post subject: Unknown traffic and what to do with it?
|
|
|
Hi all
Been reading this excellent forum for a while now, and thought that maybe one or two of you could offer me some advice?
I have several domains registered that I have bought over the years that I have never done anything with. I have recently changed my hosting so that I have separate accounts for each domain - I am thinking about constructing my first affiliate site.
Anyway, when I was moving the domains about, I noticed that pilky.com has been getting 200+ hits per day out of nowhere, there is no content on the site. I have had nedstat tracker on the parking page I was using, you can view the stats by clicking on the little icon at the bottom of the page.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do with the domain/traffic? At the moment I have a searchfeed search on there, and a link to a mobile phone site I own, but it seems a shame not to develop a site around the traffic that is already there.
Cheers - Simon Pilkington. |

Check your logs for keywords people were using to access your site.
This usually may help in finding ideas for content. In your case i am not so sure: everyone looks for pilky com and you get lots of visitors that way.
What is pilky? And are you able to offer it? _________________ Explore The Most Up to Date Site About How to Succeed with Adwords! |

Hi Simon,
Review the stats in more detail and check out the following:
(just a couple thoughts)
- See if the hits are actual visitors and not from bots/crawlers and/or other software.
- See where they're coming from (i.e. SE's or other websites/pages)
- See if any are arriving from using any keywords.
There could be quite a bit more info, depending on the type of stats you
get, but the latter 2 would be the ones I would focus on the most.
Use the info, whether it's the keywords used from an SE or another website,
to your advantage.
If most are websites, visit the websites to see what type of content is on
there and what they're all about. If it's appropriate info, evolve your site
with similar content.
If you have keyword traffic, see if you could create useful content around
those keywords to increase your traffic.
You could go about the content quite a few different ways... there are
bloggs, you could have dynamic pages for ClickBank programs that
fit within the area of content, regular content pages, or a product page to
resale an item.
If you get enough information from the stats, it's ultimately up to you on your
content knowledge and interest. If you don't know anything about a specific
niche, do a little research.
This is just from my perspective and how I would initially go about finding
use for it.
What I've mentioned is only the tip of what you could do, there are really
to many different ways one could go about using this to get specific.
Hope this answered your question! _________________ All The Best,

I am Pilky! (abbreviation of Pilkington, nickname)
Im not too sure that I would really want to offer me, or what I could expect a fair price to be
Thanks for the suggestions, the only thing I can come up with as a keyword is 'games'. That was on the log a while ago, so I built the parking page to include 'games' in the title & description tags.
Gaming is something I dont really know much about, and not really an area of interest for me. I have (quickly) browsed through cj's games section and couldnt really see anything suitable. Anyway, I dont think I could come up with 'games' related content.
Think I am a bit stuck really... although any suggestions on the games front would be appreciated.
Thanks for the replys guys! |

Hi Pilky,
as already mentioned in my previous post and also by aesoft, you should check your logs for any keywords/phrases. When I had a look at your logs this morning, I have seen searches for ringtones, but also for pilky com (that initiated me asking what pilky is - brandname etc).
An example of how to offer something related to mobile phones actually can be seen on your stats page, where nedstats offers ringtones and wallpapers.
Start having some content on your site ( to pre-sell) and then forward the prospect to your merchant.
All described in very much detail in the affiliates masters course
If you have any questions, please come back to this forum.
Btw: why didn't you register? Pilky is a nice name ... (much better than Guest) _________________ Explore The Most Up to Date Site About How to Succeed with Adwords! |

Pilky, if you think gaming is the proper target for your site (based on your log files), then you can hire content writers to write the content for you. All you need to do is figure out what the profitable keywords are, a USP and structure for your site, then decide on the articles you need to help focus the site.

A quick search in Google for "pilky" comes up with "Did you mean: pilkey"
So here's a theory. People go to pilky.com by mistake, while trying to reach pilkey.com, some sort of a children's site.
I don't see too much you can do with this traffic. Perhaps you could offer to sell your domain to pilkey.com.
Regards,
Yaron |

Hi again and thanks for the advice.
Following the logs today I spotted someone searching for epilky also - does anyone know what an epilky is? I did a quick search on google, but it came up with nothing.
I think I might develop the site along the theme of mobile phone games - I already have a UK ringtones site http://www.txtmsg.co.uk and own another uk domain http://www.pixmsg.co.uk that I have yet to do anything with.
I have read Allans newsletter about hiring writers, I guess it is something I will consider as I haven't really the time to do it myself.
Anyway, once I have figured out what to do with it I will post again - if you guys have any more ideas please do let me know!
Cheers - Pilky.
ps - I dont really want to sell the domain as it is my nickname - I had planned to put up a personal site there, a blog and portfolio or something, but its another thing I never seem to have time to do! |
