Post subject: Who to exchange links with: How relevant should sites be?
|

What approach should be taken when looking for link partners? How close should the sites theme be to yours? For example:
I have a site based on songwriting http://www.ultimatesongwriting.com/ and one based on Yamaha keyboards http://www.yamaha-keyboard-guide.com/ .
My problem is deciding who to exchange links with. Should I exchange links with all musician and music related sites, as long as they're good sites, or should they have to deal with the songwriting theme or the Yamaha keyboard theme respectively.
Thanks for your contributions.

Ken says don't exchange with competitors, so that would leave out sites exactly like yours. You could find actual songwriting artists to exchange with for the one site, that's on topic and related but not competitive.
On the keyboarding site, you could find sites on other instruments, particularly ones on keyboarding lessons and instruction, piano, etc.
I wouldn't hesitate to exchange with Music sites, but would try for the above first.

Debs, I know that you've gotten a million compliments from forum members but I'd like to compliment you one more time on being sooooo helpful and taking time to respond to our questions. Charlie, Allan, DatabaseDesigner, Larry and so on are some others who come to mind right now but Debs is Queen.

Hmm, now I'm confused. Why then does SBI Value Exchange ask for keywords and then send you a list of sites associated with your keywords. Why wouldn't they do just the opposite and send a list of exchange sites that are not in direct competition?

It depends on the keywords you put in charles. I've mentioned on here several times, that if you want to get good matches in VE, DON'T put in keyphrases, put general topic keywords, separated with a comma. That way you get the "general" flavor matches you need, not just direct competitors.
DON'T
keyphrase one, keyphrase two, keyphrase three
DO
keyword,keyword,keyword

I wouldn't worry about dealing with the two separately. They may be separate niches, but they're related enough when it comes to complementary links.

As my mate Aaron used to say... I can't see any problem with alphabetical order?

Could you suggest a set of rules to follow to tell whether a site is a direct competitor or not?
I can't and I should think it would be tricky to write an algorithm for SBI, too - so I'm guessing nobody has.
Debs' method sounds good to me.
All the best,
Charlie. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."

If you are still confused or can't decide who you should change links with
why not checking another site with relative success with reciprocal linking.
If you go to www.5starshine.com which is highly ranked in major
search engines under search term "car wax", check out all his link
partners.
You will notice that it's arrange in different category, and all of his link
partners has to do with cars ie....muscle cars, sports cars, classic cars,
etc. Some of his link partnets doesn't have anything to do with car wax
but, manage to get to number 1 in major search engine.
You could do something like that. You can create a category for
"songwriting contest" or "songwriting online courses" or "songwriting
consultants" or "lyrics related" or "music teachers" .
Hope that helps, _________________ Paul Penafiel

Allan, Charlie, DatabaseDesigner, Debs, Larry and so on. Charlie, is this better?
By the way, if anyone wants to exchange links, don't be shy. _________________ Ten Real World Sample Sites |

It's definitely a step in the right direction!

Hi, Mantius,
And how about karaoke sites? Karaoke is a pretty frequently searched keyword, so you might luck into link partners who have a lot of traffic. There are also karaoke affiliate programs - I think shareasale.com has one - so it might be a useful keyword for linking.
Disclaimer: I have never done karaoke. _________________ www.home-jewelry-business-success-tips.com |
