There is so much rehashing on this subject. Same old Same old.
The bottom line is to TEST.
I've used a 3rd party tracking script so I would know simple little things like: Which Ads are clicked on. Who referred that person to my site? Which colors work best. And on and on. It's the kind of information you MUST have if you truly want to Play the Adsense game. Google Does NOT provide you with enough detail. They play the secrecy game.
I have (In the past - I no longer send traffic off for pennies) been very successful with 234x60 and all the Square Block Sizes.
I am not for reinventing the wheel with colors. People click on blue links for a reason.
Yes you can hide your links within the article, or make them stand out. There is no one perfect way - you need to TEST!!!
I wouldn't put Adsense on anything I cared about. And if you are just creating big article sites for the sake of displaying Adsense - good luck with that. Google isn't stupid; they know how to rank the MFA sites and pay you next to nothing.
I have sites as large as 1,000 pages that didn't get developed over night. I no longer create sites much larger than 100 - 200 pages.
quest gave a very good answer to this question and I would have to second his link to google hotspots.
I personally have had great success with all the block styles and the banner style at the bottom of my articles. The block styles are to the top left of my articles. Mainly because this is were people normally start reading from.

You are absolutely right in wanting to place the AdSense within the page content.
One of the things that separates website owners who make a little money, and website owners who make a lot of money, is the Adsense ad placement within their web pages.
Where you place your ads on your web page is just as important as the content of the page itself.
I can tell you what you should do as per my experience:
Avoid putting the ads in a horizontal block along the top of the page, if possible. Placing your ads that way will usually ensures that the Adsense ads won’t get noticed because most people have become so accustomed to seeing these ads at the top of web pages that they don’t even notice them. People will typically skip over your ads and go directly to your page content.
So if you want are aiming to place within the page content, try placing them between paragraphs, or place a block of ads to the right of a section of text, they will be visible to your viewers.
They will also seem more relevant to your content, so people will be more likely to click on the ads. _________________ I use the FREE Ever Profits toolbar.
