What has worked best for me is to use what I would call an aggregator which is basically a service that can place a classified ad in a group of papers, magazines, etc... around the country and/or different countries at a dramatically reduced rate.
As to whether or not the visitors will be targeted, that would depend on a few things, not the least of which is the ad itself.
Newspapers will go to a community... not a market niche. The ad will be placed in the appropriate section in the paper which is what narrows down your focus.
And in my book... If I create my ad properly and someone sees it ... and they visit my site as a result... that's a targeted visitor.
The ads I've run have done well.
I created a short domain name and listed that domain in the newspaper. No other ads pointed to that domain.
On that domain was a brief pitch with an offer of free information and a capture form. Within the space of a couple of weeks, I generated over 30 leads with name, email, address, phone, and some demographic/qualifying info.
I closed quite a few of those leads.
Come to think of it... I should go set up another domain and get in touch with my ad guy again!

I've been intending to try newspaper ads for years, but always seem to have higher priorities. Who's a good ad aggregator?

Hanson and Hanson is the company I use.
You can sort through papers by state, magazines, specials and group buys, and so on. It's not real fancy or complicated but I've been dealing with Brian Hanson for about 11 years.
I've had ads that fell flat on their face and ads that did very well. But I've never found a better deal for running my ads than these guys.

Hi Brian, First, please go back to the post, click on Edit and change the link to a straight link.
You can click on PM and send a forum member a private message which contains an affiliate link or any info the forum member asks for.
We like as much discussion as possible to take place in public but there's no way we can insist on that.  If forum members want to use the private message system to form friendships etc, that's fine with us.

Is it considered bad form to reply with this sort of request along the lines of :
"Sure, I've got a good option for that. PM me for details!"?
Clearly, there is a line between blatant promotion and valuable contribution/discussion and I enjoy the real discussions so I don't want to cross that line in your forum.

Yes, because it takes the discussion off the forum and "helps" only the person who takes up the offer.
Some people call it trolling, because it's regarded as fishing for leads.
We're fairly relaxed about it here. We don't have a written rule about it. We haven't banned anyone for doing it.

So ... if I'm understanding correctly, you want someone in a position such as this one, when asked for info on a particular service, product, or offer, to just provide the main company URL and give up the commission that would come with providing the affiliate url?
I'm pretty clear on the idea of not just blatantly advertising, but when someone asks you for information you can provide, are you really going to say, "Here... just go straight to the company. I don't want to make any money on this."?
Note: This is not designed to be confrontational. My experience on some other forums is that if you are ASKED, it is ok to provide the Affiliate Link. Just want to be clear.

Definitely news papers doesn't bring much traffic as the people has to remember the complete URL for the source. This is not a easy and convenient way for the users.
I think Link exchange and communities bring the highest traffic and ofcourse the search engines.

Divya, my tests have proved to me that newspaper advertising is very effective and I have to wonder how you've come to this conclusion.
Having a simple URL certainly helps but visitors don't have to "remember" anything. They look at the URL on the newspaper that is in front of them as they type it in to their browser.
What are you basing this blanket statement on?
Have you personally run newspaper ads to promote your own site?
Did you track the results to find out how many people responded to the ad itself?

Hmm... i haven't used this source but i wrote this through a survey site result...

Off-line advertising certainly has its place. How effective it is probably depends on the nature of the business.
