When selecting keywords to target your site from, from a HUGE list (most popular searched one at the top)
I heard you shouldnt go for the most popular keyword, to point to your site (as an anchor text)
because this one wil have LOADS of competition.
So from a list of 100 keywords, i wont go for the top/most valuable one.
I wil go for a lower one, type it in google and see what quantity of Search it comes up with.
What quantity of search volume of google should i be looking for, for a reasonable keyword
for my site?
For example
Google results for 'affiliates'
= 1 - 10 of about 198,000,000 for affiliates
198,000,000 is TOO large... so what google figure should i be aiming at, while in selection of
5-10 keywords for my fairly new site? (keywords which aint in as much competition as the TOP/popular HIGH ones)

I don't see anyone rushing to give you a definitive answer on this, and I'm not surprised.
There are all sorts of different ways of choosing keywords. If you're planning a website and choosing the 5 or 7 most important keywords for it, I think you need to look a bit more deeply than the number of results in Google. That just shows you the number of pages on which the keyword appears. What is much more important is the number of pages which are OPTIMIZED for that keyword.
Also, is the site you're building a little site with which you're hoping for quick results, or a large site you'll keep working on for the next two or three or more years? I believe your approach to keyword research should be totally different depending on your situation and your goals.
If you're in this for the long term, building a seriously useful, interesting, authority site, you can aim very high with your main keywords. At the start, you'll be found for very non-competitive phrases, and as your site grows and gets good links to it, you'll gradually be found for more competitive keywords. It may take you two or three years or even more to be found for very competitive keywords, which have high traffic.
So the answer depends on your situation and on your determination to succeed. Also, it depends on your experience. The more experience you have, the higher you can aim.
I find it satisfying to aim for extremely non-competitive phrases, and see if I can very quickly be No.1 for them. However, I also aim for extremely competitive phrases, thinking that I may achieve results with them - one day.
Here's a more detailed post I wrote on this which may help...
Well I optimize primarily for Google and hence I prefer using Google adword tool to extract keywords. What I usually do is to insert a particular keyphrase and then select the keywords displayed for that phrase. Keywords that are high in serahc and low in competition are the ones that I prefer. Can't say about the range though.
I would use a liitle of both. Some high traffic terms and some lower ones you know you can get ranked fast for. This way you get some traffic sooner. _________________ Surveys that pay Cheap lcd Tvs t1 prices Web Hosting paypal
