All,
I've been putting together my key word list, and it is more extensive then I would have expected, and I already know that it will be getting bigger.
My question is what kind of ratio do most of you use (for the key words to go after) of the searches of a key word per month as compared to the number of sites that offer that keyword.
For example I currently have a key word phrase with 1260 searches a month, but only 4 other sites have that key word phrase, so that sounds like a good ratio to me. But on the other end of the list I have another key word with 15720 searches each month, but there are about 81,400,000 with that key word. So I don’t think that will be a word worth trying to rap a page around.
So what kind of ratio is a good median for searches to sites offering that key word?

That sounds VERY, VERY good to me - a rare find.

Sounds a tough one. However, we need to know a bit more. If you look at the top 10 search results, how many of those pages are actually optimized for that phrase? Do they contain the phrase in the title - the most important place? Do those pages have thousands of links to them? If so, they'll probably be difficult to beat. Do they all have high PageRank? Are there a few low PageRank pages in the top 10 - say under 4. If so, perhaps you could manage to sneak into the top 10 with a bit of work.

Different affiliates are going to answer that in different ways. Choosing keywords seems to be more of an art than a science. Here's a lengthy post I wrote which may help...
I hope that helps more than it confuses. _________________ Allan Gardyne

Once again Mr. Gardyne you have given me some great insight and I truly do appreciate it.
The information and the links you gave show me that I have quite a bit more work to do, but it's definitely starting to add up to a much bigger picture then when I started and hopefully more profitable also.
I keep getting more excited to get my site up and rolling the more research I do. But I know if I don't have a good foundation and plan as to where it's going from the start, things will be much harder down the road.
