I have always used .com's and have been more fond of those, but I'm considering purchasing a large number of .info's for a project that I'm working on.

Does the top level domain matter when getting ranked by Google or any of the other search engines? Does anyone have any research or theories on that?

Thanks.

I can't think of any possible reason why the search engines would treat a .INFO differently from a .COM.

Any disadvantages would result from how people perceive your sites and how they remember them. You may lose some repeat traffic to the .COM version.

I have read in some so called gurus books that .info domains are less search engine friendly compared to .com.

Any domain would have a fair chance in ranking. What matters is how well you optimize your site for the keywords you want to rank in - onpage (title, meta, keywords, etc) and offpage (backlinks with your keywords as anchor texts.

Yeah, I heard it too. I'm not much of SEO expert, but I think I agree on it. That's why .info is way much cheaper than .com.

They are the same as far as SEO goes. .com is just easier for people to remember and promote offline.

.info extensions are not taken seriously as they come only after .com .net.org and country TLDs, you'd have to compete with all that when promoting your websites.

That is correct.

The TLD has no affect on rankings. Matt Cutts posted on it in his blog.
