Post subject: Which solution will save the most PR?
|
|
|
I have a sports site with 5 presell pages.
Each of these pages links to a page with all the links out to my merchants.
Which would preserve PR better?
1. use a meta tag nofollow
2. leave the about 30 links on each page alone
3. just send them to the merchant instead of the actual product
so they can look around for themselves.
Thanks,
Deb |

If you put a nofollow tag the SE's won't follow your internal links either.
One link out or 20 links out makes no difference, since PR is split amongst all pages, the only difference is in how many internal text links you have on the page ... if you had one internal and one external ... 50% of the available PR (roughly) goes to each text link.
If you have 1 internal link and 9 external links, then 1/10th stays onsite, and 9/10th goes offsite.
Do the math on your configuration and see what works for you.

I'd consider using javascript to create links to the merchants. This way the SEs won't follow them, and PR will not be lost.
Leave all internal links as href text and then they can share any PR amongst themselves.
Hope this helps,

So is confining your PR that important?
Should I be converting all my affiliate links to JavaScript links (or span links) so I don't pass PR through? _________________ Eric D. Burdo

| So if I have 25 pages with an average of 15 internal links each, and 5 pages with an average of 30 outgoing links, then that is 375 internal links vrs. 150 out going links. So I should not worry about how much is leaving? Did I understand you right Debs? |

You would calculate PR on a per page basis, not for the site overall when it comes to outgoing links.
To be honest with you, I don't think it is anything to worry about. The amount of PR going is usually so small, it isn't a concern. Especially if you continue to get more links coming into your site from other sites which can help build your PR faster than you lose it.

I think it depends if you are trying to boost the PR for other pages you control by linking to them yourself.
If you are, possibly yes.
Cheers,

If you are concerned with PR look at PR on a page basis but the best way to "manage" PR is with the overall site linking structure. You can use java script to mask the link on the product page and "save" PR but with 30 links out... what are you doing with the PR.

PR is something you either need to take the trouble to understand or forget about altogether...
Leslie Rohde's "Dynamic Linking" - a bonus with Michael Campell's "Revenge of the Mininet" describes this in detail. Sean Burns "Rankings Revealed" also explains PR well.

Exactly. Too many for anything but a sitemap, or a directory.
Too many choices leads to confusion... leads to no action at all. What's the MWR? Get someone to click a link (any link)?
All the best,
Charlie. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."

Charlie,
I agree on understanding the PR. It's best to consider from the start of building a site.
Leslie Rohde's "Dynamic Linking" is worth purchasing the Revenge eBook for that alone. _________________ Gary
