Hello everyone,

Is Google sensitive to font size when it comes to indexing?

I have alot of pages in Arial 2 due to the amount of info on them. Is there any risk of Google seeing them as suspicious due to the small font, and blocking them from the index?

Thanks!

Google does look at font size but the won't have a problem with Arial 2.

Cheers

Sean,

Have you got any ground rules for us regarding font sizes and Google?

I have normally used exact pixel sizes (specified in external CSS) to try and minimise cross-browser layout differences, but I know many people like the option of changing the size of text via their browser text size.

How does Google rate x-small and xx-small relative CSS method? I ask as this allows resizing via browser changes if people want.

As I said, any ground rules? I have heard SEs don't like very small text, but that's a bit vague for comfort.

Cheers,
Charlie.

P.S. Is there any harm in making my external CSS files non-indexable?

You can use the em instead of px to allow users to be able to resize your text.

I primarily use px though right now... there are still some quirks with browsers and xx-small and em settings.

I don't know - but I am.

My eyes aren't as good as they used to be.

Let me guess. You're under 45? If so, are all of your visitors?

If you use an external CSS file, it doesn't really matter much because the crawler won't see it - they'll just treat the text as normal size (or whatever size you specifiy in the HTML of the page).

They treat text that is made larger than the default as being more important. So, I guess they could treat text made smaller as less important but I don't know for sure. It won't really matter enough to make a difference.

The SEs claim to be able to see tiny text but they aren't very good at it. I've seen lots of sites that use text so small that you can't read it - but they still rank well. Basically, I think it's something that may only affect you if you have a manual review - if that happens, the text definitely needs to be readable.

Cheers

...I'm under 45, too. Wink

I know Debs has complained about text that can't be resized, too, but ironically I have problems with pages where the text can't be reduced in size - not for reading, but for printing out...

I've got too much paper lying around as it is.

Please don't mention pieces of string, but any opinions on what is a reasonable px size for main text? (The other problem is, I'm still on 800x640 screen res, with a small screen.)

I'd heard rumours saying the opposite (without evidence, as usual).

I'm certainly not planning anything a human reviewer wouldn't be happy with, just don't trust robots deep down.

Thanks,
Charlie.

Actually I am nearly 48 Very Happy I can read it, so I guess most others can.

The question is, can Google readd it without the use of a filter?

Regards.

Me too. Even if they do request your CSS file, there are too many pages showing in the rankings with tiny text (manipulated by a CSS file) - the crawlers don't know what to do with it.

Cheers
