Im learning here that link popularity is the big key to the search engines. What is the best way to get sites to link to you. Is there any negitive ways that will hurt your rating. Are reciprocal links looked down a pond?

Best Regards,

Casey

Create something they'll want to be associated with or bribe them in some other way. Think "what's in it for them".

Link farms spring to mind.

Also bear in mind that not all links are created equal in the SEs eyes. Stick with href text links and you should be fine.

Cheers,
Charlie.

Casey, there is a post in the Links forum about what to look for from site, how to evaluate links, etc.

It's a great resource.

DO NOT Use Link farms. Those are frowned upon!!

Reciprocal links are not frowned upon, in fact, they are looked highly upon by search engines. Basically they figure if another website will link to you then you must have something worth looking at.

It is best just to do a search for other sites in the same category as yours and then ask them for a link exchange. You should always put a link to their site on your site first. Many webmasters will refuse or not reply at all but you will get plenty that accept. As your ranking goes up you will start to get most of them to accept.

I agree with Trent about the link farms. You WILL be penalized.

What I did was create a "Resource" page on my site where I list all related sites that I participate in link exchanges with.

I also have a page called "Partner with Us" on my site that includes a form for people to fill out (URL, descrip, etc.) to make it easy for people to suggest a new partnership.

I also have done backward link checks on my competitors to find out who is linking to them. I've found a lot of new places to exchange links this way.
