I started a small online business which is a local business directory, and since starting this i noticed a demand for web design services. I have no experience of web design so i decided to recruit some designers and try and make something of it. I've obviously heard of blogging and read various blogs and think it may be beneficial for me nbut i have no idea what could i write about in a blog for either my web design business or my online directory. Any tips, ideas, hints?!? Muchos Gracias padres Smile

Normally I would advice to blog about what you love and have passion for. But since you are out to blog in support of your website, best is that you write about topics within your niche. If you do not have enough knowledge on this, researching and reading a lot is the first step you could do Wink

I am kind of clueless with the online directory, but for the Website Design business you should blog about new technologies that help website design become easier to do and easier to implement on a web host. I would say various .NET and web programming languages and programs. Dare I say it (Adobe Programs) for one. People always want to know how they can be better than the competition or why you are better the competition. Tell them about all the cool stuff you can do now because you have updated quickly!

Yea, like what Mr. Cat told you, you should
stick to your niche topic.

A blog can be very effective for your business
as long as you do it right. But don't treat it as your
hobby, if you treat it as your hobby, you will get
the hobby kind of results. Treat it seriously.

Perhaps, combine webdesign and copywriting. Please do not take this the wrong way...rebuilding a site or giving it a face lift can change an Ugly site that does not sell to a Pretty site that does not sell. Combining the benefits of web design and copywriting is what webmasters need...even if they do not know it-grin.

You will probably discover (my opinion) that most independent webmasters that can afford outsourcing are quite knowledgeable in both web design and copywriting, but are looking to outsource to be able to devote more attention to other areas of their business. Provide both?
One quick example to make my point...a site about 8 to 10 pages, absolutely beautiful (you could tell...I could, anyway, that this was professionally designed, templates, graphics, navigation...you name it ...perfect....almost...???
ONE Call to Action, just one in 8+ pages, and none of the copwriting ingredients to grab attention, create desire, etc.
Webmasters need both design and copywriting, perhaps you may want to fill that need. Good Luck on your Internet Adventure.
Much Success,
George Pierce

Totally agree with your point George.

I have come across some sales page with lousy
design. And of course, if there are 2 products for
you to choose at the same time, you will choose the
one that looks more 'pretty and quality'.

The 'outside' of a website is very important.
Before this, my blog's design is not really
that professional. And after I changed the template,
the opt-in increases. This shows that the design of
your website count as well.

So put effort into both the layout of your website and
the content.

For the layout of your website, you can design it
for once and forget it. Keep on concentrating
building quality content after that. Very Happy

I think if blog support the site , then most of the
content that you posted in Blog would represents somehow the content of your website directly or indirectly.

Suppose If you have web site that contains " Work at home business" and similar type of products, you try to write blog on related topics so that you can pull
Possibly targeted customers.

Why not blog by doing reviews of sites that are included in your business directory that should keep you going with blog posts for a while.

Obviously you would have to be nice to them in your review.

It is good to blog about your business.
But you need to understand that creating a blog
means creating another job for yourself.

Many blogs out there are left untouched because
their owners gave up and abandoned their blogs.

So if you've decided that you're going to create
a blog, make sure you can stick with it for at least
5 years.

That means, it is better to go for a topic that you're
interested in. For your case, blogging about your
business is a good thing because since you're already
in it, so you just need to set up another medium
to interact with your prospects and customers.

Write about the things you have some knowledge and experience but make sure its a big enough niche that might be profitable. Maybe your answer is my links below. Cheers, Amanda Wink

I would agree with many of these statements. I also think depending on your niche you should encorporate other things into blogging. Sometimes people can lose interest in blogs if they are just slapping articles up (believe me ive done it)

I think too you should encorporate interesting things. I have added links to other pages on mine, also put up a forum. To keep things moving we have added a fun contest were the public is invited to make a character logo. It does depend on the niche but these are all great ideas to get you going and keep a fair amount of traffic wanting to return.

Thanks for that one. I do believe that while you should update your site or blog daily, you should ensure that you have something new and interesting weekly (I think it's going to be a lot of work to come up with an original and highly interesting blogpost everyday, unless your blog is about silly celebs in hollywood.)

You should write and blog about the things that you know and the things that you like. Even if you are new to blogging, you should always have the best thoughts about the niche/topic because that's what people want to read and know.
