I have been reading this forum for a while now and I'm very impressed with how well everyone seems to get on and the ease of which people assist each other.

I had never even encountered the term Affiliate Marketers before December 2003, so I am so green about this, seemingly, successful occupation, that its not funny. Every day I learn something new and every day a lot goes way over my head!

Any way, would any one like to divulge a little information and let me know roughly how may web sites thay have and whether they are earning any money from them? Or am I over stepping the mark?

I'm not tryig to be nosey just curious about something I know very little about?

Thanks,

Brett

I have 2 complete sites, one that will be finished with in a week (look for that link in my sig. sometime around then!), and another in the works that should be completed in a month and a half.

My goal is to get about 1 site up a month.

I have 2 affiiliate bases sites, 1 product based site, 1 service based site, and then my personal catch-all site, that has a little bit of everything. Smile

Currently, I make about $50 a month... but all but one of those sites are brand new, and I am still learning... Smile

Hi Brett,

I currently have:

1 content site (about 70 pages)
1 "tweener" site (26 pages)
6 mini sites (5-6 pages)

I have a second content site in progress that will be finished in about 7 weeks. I have a slew on new mini sites on the board, some of which will finally dabble into internet marketing. I'm tired of never having an appropriate site for my sigs on IM boards.

Earnings-wise, I'll finally top 1K for the first time this month, but I just got blown away in the newest Google update, so earnings may dip a bit next month.

Fortunately, I have some good rankings in Inktomi, and many SEO forums are reporting that Yahoo has begun geographic testing in their move from showing Google results, to Inktomi results.

Hopefully it will all equal out.

Thanks for asking this question. I really hadn't taken a step back before now to analyze how much work I've done since I started 9 months ago.

"If you build it, they will come." ~ Field of Dreams

This seems to be true for affiliate marketing as well.

Hope this helps!

Good question!

1 SBI site
1 dedicated affiliate marketing site
1 online ezine site
1 "retail" site
3 product-oriented, information, resources, other links sites
1 dedicated to a book in print written many multiple years ago
1 dedicated to one fiction ebook for young adults

Keeps the two of us busy, and yes, we earn our living on these.

Sorry if this is slightly off-topic for this thread, but I wanted to ask what you think of Phil Wileys Mini Sites book? Presumably you rate it given that you've linked to it?

I'm just getting into this Affiliate stuff. I stuck some AdSense ads on my website just to see what would happen, and got amazing results. That got me thinking about the whole business and now I'm working on my first "proper" affiliate site (a mini site), but I haven't read any of the books on the subject and I wonder if reading this one might help me up the learning curve.

Love this forum by the way, I'm slowly working my way through the whole thing!

Cheers,

Annie.

Hmm,
- 1 mini site (new, cute, very popular topic, losing money)
- 3 new, small content sites, together earning about $60/mo, lol

Not getting rich but I've just started at this and have a LOT to learn.

Oh, lost a bit of money at google adwords, too, trying to sell ClickBank products. LOL.

Thanks for the info.

Just so I can get it straight a...

"Mini site" is determined by how many pages it has?

"product" based site - your seling your own products?

"service" based site? not sure what that is?

Is a content based site similar to a product site?

Sorry for the "basic" questions but I'm just trying to get a handle on it all.

Thanks,

Brett

There are 3 basic types of sites ...

Micro site or single sales page type

Mini site

Content site ... largest of the 3

Then you have the focus of the site which includes

direct product sales which can cover retail, wholesale, physical products, software, ebooks

direct service sites cover things like consultations, common for doctors, lawyers, and loads more I just can't think of right now. They don't deal in a physical product, their expertise is their product.

You can do a minsite for a product or service, same with micro and content sites.

Then you have affiliate sites, which can focus on preselling/promotion of products or services offered by various merchants and service sellers.

Affiliate sites can also be mini, micro or content sites.

There are also strictly informational sites such as government and educational institutions etc. which have a tendency to be large content sites but without the affiliate, service or product based focus.

When I say service, I mean fee services, so there is no confusion.

Hope this helps clarify a little.

Annie,

Do I recommend Phil Wiley's book? Absolutely, with these reservations:

1) Some of the sections of the book are getting rather dated. For example, Phil makes several references to GoTo.com, which changed their name to Overture.com a few years back.

2) Phil gives a cell phone site as one example of a mini site he created. Phil likes to put his minisites in the pay-per-click search engines to make some money while he waits for the free search engines to rank him. However, the bid costs for many competitive industries today (like cell phones) makes this an extremely difficult game to play in 2004.

Those two items aside, I think Phil's book is nothing short of amazing. It's *still* the best book on the market for getting started with mini sites, and it's the primary reason that I'm earning money on the internet.

Now that Phil seems to be in "semi-retirement", I've given some thought about writing my own mini site guide. It wouldn't be 191 pages like Phil's, but it would bring the information up to date. I really want to do it, but don't want to step on toes, since I respect Phil so much.

I'd love some thoughts from others on that front.

Brett,

These definitions are definitely a moving target. Each person's opinion will differ slightly. Here are my definitions:

1. A mini site is generally determined by how many pages it has. I tend to view it as 5-20 pages. (A micro site being 1-4 pages)

2. A content site is generally anything over 20 pages, though others may say that 50 is a more reasonable number.

3. From a strict affiliate marketing standpoint, a "product" site really doesn't exist. I always think of a product site as more of an online store. A mini site can "sell" both affiliate products or your own products. In either event, these sites should have at least a couple of pages of content describing their product. A content site can still sell products. My 70 page site has 10 "product" pages that all my other content points to. This is the method described in Martell's book.

Hope this info helps. If you need more clarification, just let me know. Smile

Take care,
~Mike

I'm always amazed that people seem to have so many sites (7 sites, 8 sites etc.)

Is it because having multiple sites makes more money or is there another reason for it? (ie. the topics are really niche, so after a while, you've pretty much wrapped up the topic and have to start again?)

I've been building the same site for almost seven years now and I don't think I've ever had time to start a new site.

Or am I just slow?

It depends really....

Some niches can be attacked (or presented if you prefer) from many different angles if they are broad enough.

Four of my sites promote the same products, but do it from entirely different directions.

Other niches are even smaller, or more direct, and once I cover the basics with content (4-6 pages) I can wrap it up and move on to the next niche/topic/subject.

However, it took me a long time to learn that building affiliate content sites requires a completely different mindset from building other types of sites. Normally, I couldn't imagine building a 70-100 page site about anything, even hobby sites about topics I love. But when you have the blueprint to do it from a money-earning standpoint, it suddenly becomes quite clear and incredibly organized.

My goal with each affiliate mini site is to have 100 unique visitors a day, and $50 a week in earnings. My goals for my content sites is to earn a minimum of $300/month from them.

Since my income goals are a bit low for each site, it makes it easier to succeed. On the other hand, it does require that I keep building sites until I reach a certain level of income.

Hope that clears things up a bit. If not, let me know.

Take care,
~Mike

P.S. There is a third book that has made a huge difference in my ability to rank well in the search engines, but since he's a regular here, I'll let Sean Burns promote his own book. Wink
