Post subject: Could I trouble you for a site review
|
|
|
Hi all,
I wonder if anyone would care to give me an honest critique of my newest site -
------------------------------------------------------------
I know it's a crowded market, but the site has a little twist (as you'll see)
and I've also researched some interesting keywords/phrases to use with adwords.
The site template was provided by the affiliate network although I've modified it to suite my needs.
Feel free to say what you think - I'm not easily offended
Also thanks to everyone on the forum for posting some realy useful advice
(especially Debs!)
Lastly I think it would be rude of me not to mention a particular resource that I've found invaluable recently.
It's Jim Edwards' online newsletter "I gotta tell you"
If you haven't come accross it yet check it out at:
---------------------------------------------
It's the only newsletter I recomend now!

Thanks for your time

I am not checking any spelling or content stuff. Just layout and design issues.
1) the scrolling text is hard on the eyes. it keeps distracting me from reading your content.
2) You have too much whitespace between some of your items. Whitespace is good, since it breaks up the flow... to much whitespace looks tacky.
3) Your left column needs a bit more text or something. I think it is a menu, then realise its not. You need something else above your signup...
4) Indent your "recommended casinos" links just like your content text is indented.
5) On your Reviews page... Change this text: "Click here to go to the casino..." to something like: "Click here to go to the Aces High casino..."
6) You should explain what some of those numbers on the Reviews page mean. What does this mean: Download Package 77
7) Free Games page... again your using the "click here" jargon. That's bad... your links should have action phrase and/or keywords in them.
Overall, I like your color scheme. And your layout is nicely centered on a larger view screen... no extra gaps between the columns. _________________ Eric D. Burdo

The reason the url was removed was likely because it was an affiliate link. You may use it in your signature, but not within a standard post unless it is in the "Blatantly Promote" section.
To be honest, I don't see what your "little twist" is, it looks like a standard gaming banner site to me. No real content, or am I missing something?
I agree with everything edburdo listed, plus:
The double :: in your menu makes me feel like something was cut off before it, and the Books :: is on the edge while the Free Report :: isn't. It might be because I am used to seeing them after text, not before, as in this forum. I wanted to click them, but they aren't links, very confusing, especially since they are links in your casino lists.
On the casino offers page, the listings are too close to the left, you need more white space.
I think I just found what I was missing, your top menu shows blue on blue, so I can't read the text at all, didn't realize a menu was there. I use Netscape v7 based upon Mozilla/Gecko, not a huge market but not one you want to lose
Your reviews aren't reviews but a listing of what the casino offers; your opinions on these casinos are what counts IMO. Why should I go to Aces vs. one of the others?
Also your separator bars are odd sizes, makes the page look lopsided. I would drop the bar above the link myself.
I feel like your site name fades into the background, the white just doesn't stand out, especially with the golden yellow accents, maybe try the same golden yellow?
The "Bookmark Us" text should be centered with a good margin on each side, it looks like it runs into the left yellow block.
Ok, call me slow, I just figured out your yellow box on the left is the "where you are" notice nice idea, but again, I was looking for a link there because that's where menus are.
Also, your book recommendations need more info, give an honest review, with a few teasers.
Just a few thoughts to get you going

Johnny, the biggest problem I had with your site is your sentence structures. They are way too long and rambling which is hard to understand. Use commas and semi-colons to break them up.
Also break some of your longer paragraphs up into smaller ones, and use lists
or
to bullet some of the points you make. Here is a simple list structure:

text here

text here

for an ordered (numbered) list:

text here

text here

You can add as many of these:
text here
as you need for the items in your list, just make sure they are placed between the

or

tags in the text block.
Your ink cartridge page needs to go into more detail, I found it very uninspiring. Try listing various cartridges and compare OEM vs. off-brand cartridges in usage, pages printed, and price. Also discuss the refill your own cartridge systems available.
Don't be afraid to name brands on your cheap computer system pages, I also found this page needs more ooomph

Johnny,
If you were asking about this site :
http://www.computer-and-printer-reviews.com/
I was actually very inspired by the clean design but which is probally the SBI template. ( I booked marked your site as a reference ) DO NOT let google get you down it happens.
It just happened to me, I was getting around 15 hits per day just on the search term gaming keyboards but now it has disappeared off the face of google earth as we know it.
Just try to keep getting high pr google links to your site , also it helps if you refresh your content everday or at least every other day.
Since you have already payed for SBI give it a chance just add more content to each page, you don't need to be ranked 1st to get alot of hits , you just need alot of content to get alot of hits . ( Hey, you see I just inspired myself again, I need to write that down )
Never give up because you just might make it tommorrow ( Wow, Im on a roll )
Good Luck

Jeff gave you some great advice. More content, get into more non-competitive keyphrases ... when you target broad keywords you are going to have a hard time ranking well.
Also, Google does that pick up and drop a lot for sites that don't have good links coming in.
Of course, if you can't afford SBi, or you just don't want it, then you can get a refund, but it will be prorated after the initial 30 days. Do the contact form through support.sitesell.com or your email will be deleted by the filter.
You have a great start on your site, but it needs more content and links to get better rankings and more traffic. I hope you give it a chance. You can take the exact same content you have on SBi, and host it anywhere, but you won't get the benefits that SBi offers.
My suggestion is to go back and reread the Action Guide, I think you will find you didn't do all you could to jump start your site.
Good Luck,

Thanks Deb, Im sober today .
Here are some phrases that were typed in by google searchers yesterday from my computer gaming system site .
As you can see there was only a few high keyword hits the rest were mostly phrases . The more content you have the more chance one of your phrases will be on top for that particular keyword phrase . Hope this helps
Jeff
Note: Removed keywords getting way to many clicks , messing up my records, sorry _________________ MrSmarts

Take a one day paid access to wordtracker.com and go wild ... grab the best phrases (3, 4 and 5 words) you can for your topic, and build pages ... you will be astounded at the results!

When I say Ive been dropped, I mean literally every page listed has vanished ((
Not just 1 but all my pages , My traffic is back to 10 a day from 120 a day.
No idea why as I have the same links coming in very few but high pr.
And the content is the same .. This is very upsetting but I will sort it out.
Debs Thanks for the advice offered I will be doing everything you have suggested.
Warmest regards

Johnny, keep your chin up and keep building content! Keep getting links in. Get more niche phrases and content will go a long way, believe me.
I know how you feel ... last week I had about 40 top 10 rankings across my pages and now have less than 10. Fast, Inktomi, MSN and Lycos dropped everything for my site! I was soooo depressed lol but, I know things will settle down. After seeing that happen, I did some research and found another huge shakeup at Google too. I also dropped in rankings on some pages in Google this weekend. *sigh*
But, I'm not worried, if the phrases I targeted aren't drawing at this time, subphrases are My traffic is literally unaffected luckily, but then I have over 70 pages so my site doesn't fluctuate a lot traffic wise when these things happen.
Keep your chin up
