I don't think I had even heard of Google until about a year ago. Or was never struck enough to remember, perhaps because it's so slowww. I'm not sure why everyone talking about SEO says it is the most important search engine - has their been any hard research done showing tha most people use Google? Or that more "impulse shopprs in buying mood with money to spend" use Google? Or should I say most English speakers?
I've never done much with creating websites, etc. before but as a fairly expert computer user I tended to be someone my friends and coworkers turn to for advice -- including if they wanted to search the web or to set up a web page, things I knew less about than other topics--say data analysis or database design.
Google also seems to be much slower and slower a lot more often than altavista, yahoo, msn, etc. It's one of the reasons I still don't use it much when I am searching for something (unless I care about Google results, say for a site of my own). I'm running a fast DSL connection on modern equipment and this same thing happens to me on other computers, so the slowness seems to be Google's end.
so . .. did I just have my head in the sand and not know it? Is Google really the "only" search engine as some people (including some on this forum) seem to say it is?
I should clarify what's so slow about Google is when you click on a result. Searching is not. If I cut and paste the URL into another window the site opens BANG! but to get Google to open (I guess it's counting the clicks...) sometimes it just won't do it, or i'd have to go down the page rank, sometimes to the 2nd or 3rd page just to get a site to open. _________________ New England gardening with roses

That's from about a year ago. The latest Nielsen ratings I heard said they had about 35% of the market just with their site but I can't find a link. Keep in mind that they provide the Yahoo and AOL results also - so, over 75% of people used Google's results at some stage.
Anecdotal evidence would generally suggest that Google's market share is higher. I've got three sites in very different markets and Google supplies about 75% of the traffic (Not counting their results in Yahoo and AOL).

Google doesn't generally count clicks from their site - I guess they could be doing it via their toolbar. I've noticed no defference between Google and any other SE.

Everyone's experience is different, I must say that I don't find Google slow at all. I can't really compare to other engines 'cause I almost always use Google. It amazes me how the results are compiled and displayed so fast. As for the speed of individual results opening, this does vary but I would say that is down to my Mickey Mouse 'puter and ISP because it's the same story if I go through the browser.
The reason Google is 'King' to us affiliates is because, as Sean says, they definitely deliver the most traffic by far. I suspect that it is also popular with searchers because they don't display wads of 'sponsored results' at the top, you get to see 'web results' nice and easy.

I must admit I have no complaints about Google (as a searcher) in any respect...
I am still on 28k dial up (on an old but reliable machine) for much of my surfing, and I think Google's speed is a great selling point. Believe me, if sites are slow, I usually notice.

I would go so far as to say the opening of pages after the click would be the sites you try to access, not Google.
I have found some results opening slow, some fast, no matter what SE or directory I use.
As far as dominance goes, yes Google does dominant the majority of searches, at this time, with about 75%. Now, if 75% of the searchers are getting Google results, wouldn't you think a large portion of those searchers would also be buying?
Google Adwords (the advertisers avenue to SERPS and content sites) has been quite successful for quite a while now, advertisers won't continue to pay if they don't get results, and for most of them that means sales.
Overture is much larger in PPC than Adwords, but, Overture is also a dedicated PPC engine, while Google is not.
