I know that Google says that participation in AdSense has no bearing on page rank BUT two weeks after I joined the page rank on my home page went from 3 to zero.

The secondary pages still show the old page rank, but what the heck? Crying or Very sad

I've had no such experience with the pages on which I'm using AdSense. However, I have seen "glitches" in my page ranking from time to time that were unrelated to AdSense. Possibly in your case this was just a coincidence, and temporary.

I would think for a new page that has never been crawled by Googlebot, that adding AdSense is a good way to get the page quickly crawled and indexed. I assume that pages crawled for AdSense also become part of Google's general search index.

It makes absolutely no sense for Google to rank pages with AdSense banners lower than they would have been without. After all Google wants those banners displayed - if they didn't they wouldn't have introduced AdSense in the first place.

So Google's guarantee goes the other way round: they won't favour pages with AdSense banners.

Al is right in his crawling theory, though. I just opened a small and very narrow site, and included AdSense banners just because - well why not?
Two days later - before there was a single link to it, before I'd even told anybody about the new site - Google had it listed.
