Hi,

I submitted my site 3 or 4 weeks ago to Yahoo directory, using a free submission, but it hasn't been listed yet.

I have included affilaite links on very few pages (only really to qualify for reciprocal links). I have been waiting to get listed before adding more links. However, I'm becoming a bit impatient now. I've re-submitted my submission to Yahoo today.

Should I put the affiliate links on, even if it means I don't get listed in Yahoo? How important is a listing in Yahoo?

Thanks for you help.

Pete

My site has been up for 7 weeks. I have some affiliate links. I am now listed in Google; have been spidered by Yahoo and Inktomi/MSN, but not listed there. Submission to all search engines/directories happen automatically through SBI!.

Just wait; these things seem to take some time.

Best of luck to you,

Thanks for the advice. I have gone for the online gambling theme, which could be seen very much by any reviewer as commercial, so I'm very reluctant to add any affiliate links. This basically puts me at a stand-still because there's no point having traffic without any links. At the same time I don't want to miss out on the traffic and link popularity that the big directories will give me.

I don't have SBI. This is my first proper attempt at website designing, and I'm keen to learn everthing, but I don't want to get myself off to a bad start by missing out on the directory listing.

Thanks

Pete;
You're absolutely right. Keep submitting.

I waited 6 weeks before I got registered in Google; I guess the others will come in due time. I have had very promising results the last week: My visitors have doubled, I have passed the 50 visitors/day limit, I have nearly 20 links in (and they are important sites!). The best of all: I experience incredible hits on phrases I had never thought of...

As for gambling: In my opinion, it sounds a bit commercial Laughing

I wouldn't think it would matter at all if you added some affiliate links; however, there are much more experienced folks than me here on the forum; I hope they see this and can answer you better than I on this.

Pete

As stated before by members in these forums try to swap links with someone who are listed in google. I just created a new site on Monday Jan 12th . I then put the link to my new site on my older site that is already listed in google and yahoo. My new site was listed in google and yahoo ( in less than 2 days )and already recieving hits from the 2 SE'S.

It is much faster letting the SE's find your site than submitting them.

Pete,
carpunky is definitively right here. I experience a dramatic increase in visitor and page views after the last days, where I have got links in to me.

I will also tell you how I did it: I made an eBook; just a primer, no secret revelations in it, but it was enough to get it published in 4-5 prominent sites; traffic (and subscribers to my newsletter) is really taking off now.

Make yourself known, don't be shy to publish yourself on other sites, many of them are in your field, and they are looking for content to publish. Try to establish yourself as an expert in your field, it is actually quite easy.

I said in another post here: search on Google for

"one of your keywords" + "add a link" (or +"affil")

or something similar. I found many good opportunities that way.

Best of luck to you,

My site is listed in Google, but not very highly ranked!! If I type in the exact URL it will list my site. Unfortunately it appears that there is a lot of gambling sites (and they all seem to be above me, despite some of them not being particularly good).

In order to increase my google ranking, I guess I have to do a bit of SE optimisation (I've added a few words in my meta tags - I guess its trial and error), and I need to increase my link popularity (with sites with link pages with Google page rank 4 or more). I have read that the Dmoz and Yahoo directories are the most important places to be listed, as they send traffic and increase your google ranking. I think you have to submit to these and hope for the best (they also don't like any site that could be vaguely termed commercial). As such, I am reluctant to put affiliate links on my site as yet, which is basically holding me up as I don't want to try all sorts of marketing strategies whilst there is no affiliate links.

My queries is just whether I should just put the affiliate links up, and forgot about what the big directories think, or whether this is a big mistake!

SBI submits to their listed SE's but never submits to directories automatically. You must do manual submissions on directories you wish to be listed in, including Yahoo, DMOZ, Zeal, etc.

Major directories do not allow automated submissions, besides you have to manually browse to the proper category for your site, and that's hard to automate.

As far as your submission to Yahoo, expect a minimum of 8 weeks, and sometimes longer for free submissions. If you want to go ahead with your links, fine. It will be up to the reviewer as to whether they will allow the site period, let alone with affiliate links, so you kinda have to take your chances there.

Do a search of the forum for "yahoo listing" or "listed in yahoo" for some great tips and advice.

Cheers Debs, and everyone who has replied. Your input is greatly appreciated. Just a further quick question: How important really is getting into the Yahoo directory? Is it worth going for the editor spot to get listed?

Thanks again

My 2 cents , Get your ranking up in google for your keywords that you have picked.

If you can manage to get on the 1st two pages in google with a popular keyword and you are recieving substancial traffic from these keywords then it would be advisable to pay for the admission to the yahoo directory.

I would NOT advise it if your not ranked with your keyword in google , but its your money. It really won't make a difference if your not getting hits from google, especially with a oversaturated gambling site. Thumbs down at this period for yahoo, you can always submit later.

Good Luck

Jeff

I think you are confused Yahoo doesn't offer an editor spot. BTW, gambling sites are definately commercial and will require payment of the appropriate fees to be listed in Yahoo (I believe gambling sites may fall under a higher fee than regular business sites). Forget Zeal also, you won't get in there either.

As far as DMOZ goes, they do offer an editor application you can file, but you need to be dedicated to the process a while before you can push your own site. Plus, you won't get into DMOZ unless your site is unique, offering something new or different about gambling.

How do I get my Google ranking up? Is that just a case of increasing the number of links and adding more content? There is a lot of competition in this area, although I don't think a lot of the sites are particularly great. At least casinos and sports are something I'm interested in Very Happy

Debs, you were right about Yahoo not having editors. I was getting it confused with Dmoz (which I also figure is important). I guess that there is no point pinning too many hopes on the free Yahoo site submission, so I may as well put all my affiliate links up start the site operating (with or without the help of Yahoo directory!)

Thanks again for all your help everyone Very Happy

Pete, sorry I couldn't offer more optimistic views on DMOZ and Yahoo, but that's just the way they work ... better to know now than wait more time. Wink

You are absolutely right about how to improve your rankings on Google ... lots of good, quality content, properly optimized (not overdone ... the SBi analyzer is great for this), and yes ... links, good, quality, on topic links into your site, and some of the same going out as well.

Yahoo knows they are falling by the way-side , I look for MSN to surpass Yahoo in the next 3 yrs . Computer peeps are lazy and MSN search is already installed on most of the shipped computers. Yahoo was once great like the old chocolate drink but its getting sour.

My opinion
