I became an Herbalife distributor about 18 months ago. I was under the stupid assumption that if I had a website I could become a success at it, as I am not a "sales"person. Being a computer person who is into the "health" thing, I really believed it would be great.

I initially was creating my own website for the products, but the one that I can use, and just pay a nominal amount for each month, was far superior so I started using that. But I can't modify it at all. Promote as I may, I get inquiries but no sales.

Does anyone have any advice for me? I would like to make a success online so that I can be here for my 3 kids.

Thank you.

If you can't change the site, and it is not producing any sales for you, then its time to make your own site.

Whether you sell the herbalife stuff directly, or do affiliate programs about health-related stuff, the choice is yours. But I think you will be better off making your own site.

Right now, you can get free hosting from 1and1.com if you live in the US or Canada. The offer ends on the 21st of this month, so you have to be fast. http://www.1and1.com

They have a good hosting package, and its free... so you aren't out anything but your time if this doesn't work for you.

You will need to register your own domain... either through 1and1 (at a cost of $6.95 a year) or through a third party company such as GoDaddy.com (at $8.95 a year). I prefer the godaddy route, since you have full control over your domain settings.

I would recommend reading some of the affiliate materials and the server sellers stuff from sitesell.com - they also have a hosting package (well, more than hosting really) called SBI. You can read more about that in the SBI forum. I am not sure of the current cost, since they just had a price increase...

And ask lots of questions here... you will get lots of help.

I would highly recommend you check out http://find.sitesell.com/ in particular these 3 sections:

Already Online http://traffic.sitesell.com/
Affiliate Marketing http://affiliatemarketing.sitesell.com/
Network Marketing http://networkmarketing.sitesell.com/

I am not that familiar with herbalife, so I don't know if the last one applies to your situation.

You don't need SBi to succeed online, but it does help speed up the process of getting traffic to your site, and includes a large variety of tools in their package, which really help build a solid foundation for success, especially for those new to online marketing.

Do some searches on the forum for : USP and MWR (separate searches) to get an idea of what you need to do to stand out ... also search for "presell" there are great threads on here to help guide you in the right direction to promoting your site to convert your traffic to actual sales.

Hope this helps,
Debs

I have some advice for you....dump the Herbalife program! You have almost NO chance of succeeding with this company. Just do a search on Google and read some of the horror stories. Dump it and find yourself a non-MLM program to promote.

Not all MLM's are evil...

and if Herbalife is what you want to sell... then sell it.

But you don't have to limit yourself to just herballife.... there are literally thousands of options of stuff to sell. or to promote (affiliate programs)...

Thank you everyone for your advice. Herbalife is not "evil". In my experience, their products are wonderful (and I do earn 42 - 50% on them). I just need a way to sell them via online methods. The most successful people I know are real honest to goodness sales people, a category in which I do not fit.

Are there health related affiliate programs I could also promote that don't cost much to join? I like believing in a product that I promote.

Then maybe I could build a website with a variety of product lines to highlight and some good helpful articles on health related issues... I do have a lot of research at my fingertips.
Would this possibly work?

Affiliate programs should not cost you anything to join. So you should be OK joining as many as you want.

I would research them carefully and decide what you want your site to be about. Debs posted some good reading to get you started in the right direction...

You may want to brush up on your "salesman" skills though... if you plan on doing direct sales (herbalife) then you probably need the salesman skills....

Hi,

In answer to your question, I would say that it is extremely hard to take offline selling techniques online as taught by Herbalife even though the net really should be perfect for network marketing.

Unfortunately the internet is full of millions of people trying to sell their products or programs. I was a distributor for 18 months before I decided that everything they taught me about marketing was wrong. I am no longer really active but my wife still is.

In fact the marketing company I belonged to even discouraged us from getting involved in online marketing but still told us to have a website for people to visit. It was like the online shopping malls that people were sold on a few years ago that ended up like billboards in the middle of the desert with no visitors.

I would suggest that you set up a forum like this http://groups.msn.com/mindbodywellness and promote it. Not only are you attracting people who are only interested in health and wellness but you are building up a list of members that you can market the business or products to at some stage.

I can fully empathize with you because I know how hard it is to make a go of it with any business. The majority of people want to see instant results and when they don't get them they quit. Its probably a lot to do with our fast food culture. So don't quit and you will become successful. If you would like to discuss things further I would be more than happy to. Visit the group above and make sure you leave a message to identify who you are.

All the best,

Bad advice.
I never said Herbalife was evil. Also, I may want to sell snow to eskimos, but, what do you think my chances of success are? This is just a guess, but, probably zero to none! The fact is, your chances of success with Herbalife are almost identical. The market is flooded with this and similiar products. Furthermore, you state you are not a "salesperson". That's too bad because the main (only?) way to succeed with Herbalife and other MLM ventures is to recruit others beneath you. If you are unable to "sell" people on becoming an Herbalife distributor, you can hang it up. You didn't honestly believe the object was to sell products, did you?

I say these things not to rag on you but to open your eyes. Never fall in love with a project so much you are unable to recognize when it's time to cut your losses.

The reason that there is a 95% failure rate in MLM is not because of the industry of network marketing itself or any one particular company. It has more to do with a 'get rich quick' mentality that seems to be sweeping the internet. There is a similar percentage of people who do not make any money from affiliate programs. Those who take a long term view are usually the ones who make the money. It is like any business. Most businesses generally fail to make a real profit within the first 2-5 years. It is nothing to do with an earlier comment...

That kind of thinking just encourages the type of get rich quick mentality that obviously does not work. It is pointless bad mouthing a particular company or making generalizations. The facts are that Herbalife is a multi-billion dollar company. Sales are increasing and more and more people are moving up the marketing ladder, meaning that they are making more money than they were say ten years ago. How do you account for that?

I'll go so far as to say ... never fall in love with a project so much that you are unable to see the big picture ... determine your USP ... and build on that.

You aren't selling a product online, if you try, you will fail ... I don't care what the product is. What you are selling is a solution to a problem. Figure out the problem the searchers have, and how your product solves that problem. Once you do that, figure out how you can reach them, make them think they can't live without your product (honestly and with integrity), then you have your USP (unique selling proposition).

Once you have that, you can presell to your target market. It may not be ice to Eskimos or reading glasses to a blind man, but it will be the solution to the problem your visitor has ... even if it is herbalife Wink
