I have been an active participant in AP sometime back..but my full time job put some stops.
Ok coming to my question, I run a successful recipe website (read - good no. of visitors and a decent income). I have thought about optimizing some content and adsense in particular.
Mostly my site has recipes and lots of them but I feel the ads are not properly placed. The golden rule, as many know is place your ad in the 'top fold'. Sometimes this may mean, place your ads on top for shorter articles and in the middle and bottom for longer content.
I can safely assume that a recipe falls under the short article category. Now the main goal of my website is to help people find the recipe they want.
If I were to place an ad (any format) above the recipe - 1. Would it lead to more clicks?
2. Would this lead to less loyal vistors because they might be irritated by an ad when they expect to see a recipe.
3. Has anybody tried ad formats esp with recipe sites and if so what were the results from an earnings point of view and a vistor/customer point of view?
You can run your site for free or you can do something to try and earn an income from it.
Your visitors (as you say want recipies). Can you sell them a product that is directly related? No stick cookware, juicers, etc?
If not why not give Adsense a go. People expect to see advertising. You don't want to make it intrusive but you do want to put it in front of their eyes.
Why should the be offended by related ads? I don't click too many Adsense Ads myself, but if I see something directly applicable to my search I will. That is why they are there.
So give it a go. Experiement. Make the ads part of the "value add" to your site.
If you truly have a lot of visitors - loyal repeat visitors perhaps it is time to devleop a "list" and start marketing very select products and information to the list.
Place your best recipies on pages that are available only to people who sign up. You could make a private password site that is ad free that they can get to only after joining.
There is a lot you can do - but you have to experiment with a purpose in mind. You need to be tracking and testing.

deadlyminds, The first website I ever built, back in 1996, was a specialist recipes/info site. Some time after AdSense came on the scene I added AdSense to the site and was pleasantly surprised by the results. I placed a large square ad centered very near the top of each page. That was years ago, I've never received one complaint.

You can run your site for free or you can do something to try and earn an income from it..............There is a lot you can do...And keep in mind that a recipie niche is probably pretty low paying in terms of adsense. But cookware probably has good margins. Find the profit areas in your niche.
Thanks Quest, those were definitely worth advice, I just have to devote some time and start experimenting as you say...

Allan, thanks a lot to you too, you've just given me some moral support. I just happened to do a bit of research on some sitesell based food sites; they somehow have dispelled my myths on intrusive ads / loyalty. All I need to do now is kick myself on the backside and get to work..Unfortunately as I write this my site is down and am losing a chunk of revenue...Well that's another story.
You really have to test, to find answers to your questions.
