Hi Sean,

Quote:
Google in particular wants people to optimize their site because it helps them.

That makes sense, but...

It is a puzzle to me that since the Florida/Hilltop 'dance', the advice (which is probably correct) is that Google is (quite probably) penalizing Anchor text that reflects exactly the pages title.

After all I would have thought a link which tells a searcher exactly what a page is about is more helpful than one that doesn't. But I'm probably missing something here Smile

All the best,
Larry Chamberlain.

I think you hit it right on the head, Larry. This search engine game is loaded with hypocrisy.

They aren't doing that. It may often appear that it's the case but a range of issues will be causing penalties.

For example, search Google for meta tag software. I'm at number 1. Every link on my site uses "Meta Tag Software" as the anchor text and the title is the same.

Cheers

Thanks for replying. Well, in my book you are the bloke that knows the engines so I've got it wrong again Sad

I'll have to study up some more Smile

All the best,
Larry Chamberlain.

I'm sure you didn't get it wrong - I've read the same thing. One of the things that has made the last Google update so confusing is that there are literally dozens of theories going around. I'm yet to see one that I can't prove wrong (including my own).

In a way, it's "sidetracking" everyone. I've got hundreds of top 10 rankings on Google and as far as I can tell, I lost three in that update. I realised after a week or two that it was pointless worrying about those lost rankings and I was better to just keep replicating what I always do - create relevant content and tell the SEs what it's about. It's still working.

Cheers

I agree with Sean. After the shakeup, I read all kinds of theories on SEO being the culprit and reasons for it ... I worried my site was over optimized because I used heading tags, and wondered if I should do some major revisions.

I also worried that my theme was one of the "target keywords" that was being shuffled to the bottom.

I worried needlessly in all regards. My rankings have improved dramatically over what I had pre-Florida it just took a little time for the shakeup to shakedown Wink
