What is with toplists in internet marketing? they seem an important marketing instrument in some areas, but seemingly not in the IM niche?

Is it an overlooked marketing technique or is it just not effective in many markets?

For example:

I found it pretty hard to find anonymous proxy servers, and even more USA based ones with google.

Then after some searching I came to a site that referred to a toplist for such servers, and suddenly I found there are a HUGE amount of sites and tplists with LOADS of anonymizers and also USA based ones.

Isn't that strange?

Those webmasters don't seem to care about SE traffic!!

I just stumbled over a traffic toplist. Seeems not the greatest thing:

But the one on the top get's some nice traffic every day. Maybe there are more frequented toplists, where it's more rewardable to be in.

In adult marketing they play a major role. I have read that adult marketing is often light years ahead of other marketing fields because it's incredible competitive.

Are toplists an unexplored potential for internet markting or is it just not worthwhile?

Help me out guys.. Is that site just tracking visits and IPs? Aren't there a million sites (particularly geared toward bloggers) that do this same thing?
