Post subject: drop shipping vs affiliate programs
|
|
|
Hi all,
Im trying to find information about drop shipping programs. Its very hard to find information as to which companies offer wholesale product drop shipping. I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this system of online business. If so is it a better way to go than affiliate programs.
Regards

Kate,
There are some posts you can search for here on dropshipping pros and cons.
Basically in comparing dropship vs. affiliate programs:
With dropship you will have customer service issues, including returns, to deal with. You have to have credit card processing set up to accept orders, then process the order with your dropshipper, paying them from your account or credit card, then waiting to collect the funds from your credit card processor.
You will have to deal with fraudulent orders as well. You need to be sure you charge enough to cover your expenses, which include a lot more than just the wholesale cost of the product.
With affiliate programs, you don't have to deal with any of the above, including customer service issues, since those would be handled by the merchants. The ROI may be lower than dropship, but the aggravation factor is considerably lower, and you don't have fraud issues to deal with, or government regulations.
This may be simplified, and there may be more issues, just this is what comes to mind right now. Maybe others will chip in their thoughts too.

I do both from my site. The dropshipping can be a pain, but once you get used to it it's not too bad. Concentrate on highly profitable products.
I sell lift kits for Jeeps from my site. I usually make about $50-$100 per sale of a kit, which is a better comission than I could find anywhere. I also use affiliate programs. It's all about finding a balance, but I would not recommend starting dropshipping until you have some experience under your belt with just affiliate programs. _________________ Robert

Well, considering I run http://the-drop-ship-guide.com I figured I'd offer some input.
But most of it has already been covered...
As was mentioned, you have to handle processing of credit cards and order when you drop ship. Using affiliate programs, you do not. If you sell the right stuff via drop shipping, you can get a lot of repeat sales. Repeat sales is not extremely common in the affiliate business (but they do exist).
Drop Shipping requires more setup... you generally need shopping carts, credit card processing software, good communication lines with your customers AND with the warehouse your shipping from...
Jump on over to my site and wander around. The Drop Ship Source Directory (you'll find the link there) has some really nice tips and tools for drop-shippers... _________________ Eric D. Burdo

A great resource that I use for my drop shipping businesses is http://www.thedropshipsourcedirectory.com
They have a great supply of products that are updated every week. This website is the best guide for drop shipping I have seen out there.
I think that if you are looking for niche, you could find a product in this directory to start and flourish a great e-business. I think that a combination of drop shipping websites and affiliate websites is key to making it big on the internet...along with a product of your own to market.

Hey,
I'm starting to despair at ever understanding IP addresses! Cartess3,
Yours pops up many times - plus alternatives as well.

Wouldn't it be more polite to have a constant identity? Or am I misunderstanding how these work??

Hi, everyone!
I am seriously considering adding drop-shipping to my monetization strategy. I have been accepted as an authorized distributor for some high-quality christening products. At this point I am working on how to set up my "Fantasy-Ireland Christening Shop".
A couple of questions though:
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to set up product pages? Should one page display several products or should the products be in-context text links that go to individual product pages?
How large should the photos of products be? If I have a thumbnail image, it doesn't show much detail. But how can I make a page in SBI that only displays the large image? It would seem silly to trouble with SEO, meta tags, etc. when the page is only an image, no content.
Since I'm running this business solo, what do you do when you have to be away from it for a few days? I'll be moving to a new house in the very near future and will need to take a "vacation" from my business for at least a few days. What happens if orders come through when you are away?
Finally, thanks for the comments on the dropshipsourcedirectory.com/"Worldwide Brands". I definitely think that when it comes to expanding my products beyond the christening products, I will use the SBI discount to join that program. I don't think I've heard or read anythinhg negative about them at all, which is rare in the drop-ship business!
Thanks to anyone who has some answers/opinions to offer...
