net and org have been around for quite some time, so they would be my next choice, if com wasn't available. Net first, then org.
The others will take more time to get into the same comfort zone since they are relatively new.
I would look at .com for the primary domain for SE purposes, using keyphrases and hyphens, then a short, memorable domain in net or org for offline promotion, maybe even .info or .biz as they can be used to create a catchy domain.
Just my 2 cents,

For anyone considering domains other than .org .net and .com be advised that some programs such as Site Build It! by sitesell.com do not permit the use of any other domains. Often you may not be told ahead of time about this sort of fine print, in part i guess because it is considered a nitpicky detail. As these other domains have been around for some time now this is somewhat weird, in my opinion. the .INFO domain for example seems perfect for a content site, but make sure the program/software you are working with allows it.
In any case, the purpose of this is to warn people it may apply to so you don't end up wasting hours spent searching for available domains, etc. which you then cannot use. It's not the end of the world to not be able to do it but can be extremely frustrating when you made effort to check and then, still, no one told you.
FYI

I'd do the opposite...
It doesn't matter about .net or .org with the SEs (but I agree with the hyphens), but for offline, I'd definitely go .com unless the domain is extremely catchy...
If people forget, they'll assume .com.
All the best,

Yes, I agree with your thinking Charlie, unfortunately, .com is hard to find catchy and short it's easier with .net and .org ... that's why I suggested that
