Post subject: Screen Shot to jpg or gif?

Can anyone tell me how you can take a screen shot (print screen) and turn it into a jpg or gif? I tried to do a search for the info, but could not find it.
Thanks.

Hi Jim,
If you use Windows, there's Paint included that you can use to open the .bmp and do a save as .jpg and use the best color scheme.
But the tool of choice is a free open-source called Gimp http://www.gimp.org/windows/.It's a bit more complex to use than Paint, but the quality of the .jpg will not degrade much.
Plus Gimp is compatible with Linux and Mac OSX in case that's what you're using. |

I'm a little confused. How do you even save the screen shot as a .bmp? The only thing I know is I can paste a screen shot into a word doc, but then can't figure out how to save it in the file format I want. Can you explain a little further? Thanks.

Open an empty canvas in Paint and do a paste as you would with a word. Then save it in .jpg format.
You will find paint in start\programs\Accessories\ |

Thanks. I am not used to using Paint. I have Adobe Photoshop on my computer, but I must admit I don't know it well or utilize it to it's full potential. I didn't realize you could just paste and save as a jpg or other image file, so I took what you said and just applied it to Photoshop. Worked like a charm! This is a screen shot of this thread. I need to be able to do something similar to this for a page I am building.

Thanks a lot for the help.

Just a quick note, if you want to take a screenshot of a video, you will need a screencapture software. _________________ A.C. Moore Coupons - Design - Smart Ones Coupons |

Sorry, Jim. I had to delete the image - can't open the floodgates!!
I passed over this topic as you guys are usually well-behaved. I use PaintShop Pro which has a capture feature which can be set for multiple or single captures, full page or area captures. I can save it a a jpg. I'm sure Photoshop should have something similar if you check the menus.

Well, Wally, at least most of the time we are!
No problem...just thought the illustration might be helpful, but you are right about the floodgates.

After skimming through the replies I figured noone really answered your question. Find a key on your keyboard named "Print Screen" or similar. Press it! Now you have the entire screen, just the way you see it, in the buffer! Now all you have to do is open up an image editing tool (I use Adobe Photoshop), press Ctrl+N, Ctrl+V (i.e, File->new, after creating the canvas for the image, do Edit->Paste). Voiila!
Now all you have to do is "File->Save as...", and you'll be done! _________________ --
