Post subject: Warning Rating (yellow) Given to Associate Programs!

You will laugh at this as I did....
For those of you who have McAfee Security Suite installed on your computer, they now have a new service called Site Advisor which comes free with the security suite. It is to advise viewers as to the security of a site they are visiting.
In case you live under a rock, McAfee is currently the #1 computer security site in the world.
I was utterly shocked when I clicked on my favorite forum...other than mine!...only to see that McAfee has given AP a Yellow rating. OMG...tell me it isn't true, Allan!
There are three rating levels....green, yellow and red.
Well, they have given AP a yellow rating because...in McAfee's words..."When we browsed this site we received several pop-ups."
When I read this, I almost fell off my chair laughing! I don't remember any pop ups from AP, although I have about 6 pop up blockers installed.
But, in any evant, why does that justify a yellow rating??????
So, I submitted a review of AP to the Mcafee Site Advisor site for AP.
Here it is....
| Quote: | I really like McAfee's new site advisor, but it has some flaws...judging every site with the same standards. Popups, used strategically, are a good marketing tool, especially on affiliate sites. I chuckled when I saw that McAfee gave Associate Programs, one of the best in the affiliate industry, a yellow-level rating.

While I have already read comments from users on other sites which have been beneficial, I think Mcafee is way off base when it comes to AP.
If you have McAfee Site Advisor installed on your computer, I urge you to look up AP and "set the record straight".
Thought you all, especially Allan, would get a chuckle out of this and be interested in this.

We haven't had any pop-ups on this site for long time. (I've just checked with Jay, who designed the major revamp of AssociatePrograms.com last year.) McAfee's data on us is very seriously out of date. Not a good advertisement for the company. _________________ Allan Gardyne

Hi Allan,
That's what I thought about the pop ups. Even with pop up blockers, you usually get an audible warning when a pop up is blocked. I never get that at AP.
Yes, I think their information is way behind. They probaly should have waited on this launch until they could figure out a way to keep the info fresh. What an undertaking...monitoring all the sites online. I submitted downloads for them to check over a month ago, and there is still no mention of these on the Site Advisor page that deals with my main website.

Good grief! We forgot all about private mesage alerts. Wouldn't it be ludicrous if we got a Warning Rating for providing a service which helps forum members! _________________ Allan Gardyne

The thing is, if people use that thing of McAfee or what ever it's called and your site shows up Yellow or Red, wouldn't it make some people decide whether to visit it or not, this could in return loose a site like this traffic and damage your business. Although we know the site is fine, first time visitors will not know this and McAfee will give the wrong impression on about the site. _________________ Affiliate Programs Directory - Over 2,000 Programs

Warning! Redunant Rant Alert!
Ludicrous yes, but the nature of the beast.
Any idea, tool, technique etc that is abused enough eventually triggers an undiscriminating rejection by users.
Our industry has been in the process of throwing the baby out with the bath water for some time now, and popups are just one well known example.
Once users have seen enough sites that use blatantly manipulative BS hype copy to breathlessly proclaim the latest get rich quick gimmick, they stop caring about the real differences between stupid sites, and intelligent, reasonable, realistic helpful sites like this one.
After awhile, all sites that are about making money on the Internet get lumped in to the same box in a lot of user's minds.
Every time that happens, the market we share gets smaller.
Unless we work together to to protect our box, our brand if you will, it will eventually be dragged down to the lowest common denominator by the cheesiest practitioners of our craft.
Like any community, we sink or swim together, whether we wish it were so, or not.

Very acute insight, Rev....
I just hope your message is NOT passed over by the congregation! Can I hear an AMEN?

Ha, thanks for the smile Jim. I must agree, it doesn't really pay to take such reflections too seriously. Humor, even if gallows humor, is a more productive response.
If it's amens you want, I think we'd better hire Aretha Franklin and the Sisters of Profit choir to get the house rockin.. _________________ Free Forum And Ezine Hosting
