At the time of purchasing a hosting as first you have to choose the platform of the hosting like Windows and Linux. Generally Linux Hosting is far cheaper then Windows. but this is completely dependent on your website development if your site is built using ASP then you have to choose windows server and using PHP then you have to choose Linux server. Many windows server supports Linux also for this you have to read their manual or package includes. _________________ Free Stuff Ford Mustang Forum |

| IMO, linux server is the most secure operating systems. Many hosts recommend linux too. If you are new to this technology world then windows is as simple as that. Well, there is no conclusion to this topic. Its you to decide for the OS finally. |

Generalisations about operating systems (OS) can be difficult so rather than approaching the question going from the OS to the application I like to start with my application requirements first and then the choice of an OS will fall into place nicely.
A poorly configured Linux server is certainly not more secure than a properly configured Microsoft server if we are talking about the Internet protocols level of the OS. The typical virus hazards of Windows end user machines like XP don't really carry over to the servers because the client server model is different.
If I were just concentrating on operating systems and not application requirements my choice between Microsoft and Linux would be neither. For Internet I prefer systems that scale and are extremely network stable. I like the choice of FreeBSD Unix that is used by Yahoo and others like iPowerWeb. If the application requirements are really in the heavy duty realm Sun Solaris or HP UX do very nicely.
Cost wise the difference between Linux, Microsoft, or even FreeBSD hosting services for that matter are nil if you shop.
Talk with your local technical people about this question further but don't settle for any individual's personal preferences (including mine). Do the application requirements analysis and build the system in the manner that will best satisfy your users.
Best wishes,

As the first post pointed out, if your site is asp, or if you are planning on using sql server your hosting solution will need to be Windows.
I use a linux solution, but my development environment is on windows and I use Php and mySQL and the main apps like Wordpress.
I use a web based ftp tool to move files between the two environments.
linux solutions also tend to be a bit cheaper. _________________ ericm

And this depends on the hosting company. _________________ John Peterson

| in any case the choise of the server OS should be based on your website requirements and not on the aspects what is more complex or easy, then you`ll have rush hours when moving account from linux to windows web server |
