I thought using free articles to promote affiliate products might be a nice way to make some money. I'm already writing articles for pay, so it wasn't too hard to write another one. I didn't put the affiliate link in the article body; it was in the Resources section.
I tried submitting to two different directories. One published the article the next day, and I had a sale about 3 days later. Great, I thought; this was a good idea. Then I waited to see what the other directory, ezine articles, had to say. It took them two weeks to get back to me, and they rejected the article because it had an affiliate link in it.
Huh? I thought that's why people did this. I pulled the article.
Now, in trying to submit to other directories, I'm either finding no place to put a link (or no option for HTML), or the TOS say "no affiliate links." One said something about setting up my own domain.
I know very little about this, since I've never had my own website (except for Blogger blogs), but I think maybe they're talking about a redirect? The thing is, I don't want to go to all that trouble. Since articles can stick around for a very long time, I figure I'd be paying for that domain - basically, forever. I have a feeling I'd be spending more than I made. And the whole point in doing this was to not spend anything at all - except time, to write and submit the article.
I'm probably missing something here, but I don't know where to go next. This whole process of article writing, which seemed so simple, has suddently gotten complicated.
Can anyone provide any more information about how this is done?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Peggy
P.S. If this has already been covered somewhere, I apologize; I tried searching, and got more than 20,000 results, of which the first dozen didn't address this issue. If anyone can provide a link to the subject I'll be happy to check it out.

It is.

As you're already spending time on this, wouldn't it make sense to have a think about ways you could spend the time you're already spending more effectively?

There are ways to generate revenue online without spending money, but most of them are very time-consuming, not particularly effective and usually build someone else's business instead of building your own. However, there are also ways of doing things cheaply and effectively which your own business.

Most forum members here take a long-term view. Most of us concentrate on building websites on a certain theme, filling those websites with useful, interesting, keyword rich articles, getting traffic from free search engines and earning revenue from AdSense ads and affiliate links. If you do this right, such websites can continue to earn you useful money every day of the week for years.
Because you like writing, you have the ideal skills to do this sort of thing - probably very well.
A good thing about building your own website is that you're in control - you can put those affiliate links where you want to. And you can promote your site by writing articles for other websites, linking back to your site - another very good use of your skills. _________________ Allan Gardyne
