I found this webhosting service. They are running a promotion for free web hosting for three years. You can register a domain for only $5.95 per year. Does anyone know about the quality of the service and product they deliver. Almost sounds to good to be true.

I don't know but I did find an article on this promo in ComputerWorld.
http://www.computerworld.com/developmenttopics/websitemgmt/story/0,10801,855
I saw nothing to lose so I signed up with them. If I had two phone numbers I would definitely sign up for two accounts. It seems like a GREAT opportunity for a new affiliate marketer who needs to learn the ropes the hard way, like me. _________________ - blake

Belongs to United Internet. Similar as 1&1 in Germany ( 1und1.de (mass hosting service, that also provides internet access).
Disadvantage of the low priced (there is nothing for free in germany, as far as I know) are popup banners, that show on your site.
Nothing good for a serious marketer. _________________ Explore The Most Up to Date Site About How to Succeed with Adwords! |

The US/Canada free version is their "professional" package... for free for three years. It is not a "free hosting" in the traditional sense.
I have been using them for over a month now... and I like the hosting. You have just about everything you need... including 100 domains available on your account... PHP, MySQL, SSH (secure telnet) access... FrontPage (if you need them, turned off by default) and many other features.
If your in the US/Canada, try them. They do NOT require a credit card to sign up.... just name/phone/address... _________________ Eric D. Burdo

Sorry, but this is completely wrong! For the US/Canada citizens they
offer their pro package, which is completely free from Banner Ads,
Popups etc.
I host all my sites with them and they offer a fantastic service. There
are no popup banners or something else. They are Europes #1 Internet
Host, with free hotline and all the "Bells and Whistles" you need to run
a professionell Website!
All the best

This sounds great. I'll probably sign up with them. One more thing. I don't know anything about bandwidth. What does 5GB of bandwidth mean?
Thanks,

bandwidth is what your traffic uses when viewing your page.
The larger the page, the more bandwidth is consumed with each visitor.
The more visitors you have, the more bandwidth is consumed.
Lets assume you have a 10 MB download. And you have 100 MB of bandwidth. You could have 10 downloads per month. And then no-one else can download your file until next month.
So if you can shave that 10MB down to 5 MB, you now have 20 downloads.
5GB is not a phenomenal amount of bandwidth... but for many people, it is more than they will every use. The less images and file downloads you have on your site, the less bandwidth each visitors uses... thus you can have more visitors per month...
Oh, and you can purchase additional bandwidth from 1and1 if you need it... _________________ Eric D. Burdo

Dieter,
I was referring to the german 1&1 which as per this minute has Hosting for 0.29 EUR/Month when participating in the so called Banner community and 0.69 EUR/Month without Banners. EUR 9.60 setup applies for both versions.
The free hotline costs EUR 0,12 / Minute for product information. Calling the techies is tollfree, but they charge a small fee of EUR 4,60 per call (based on severity of the problem).
The US/Canada version may be different. _________________ Explore The Most Up to Date Site About How to Succeed with Adwords! |

Yes, I know, that you was referring to the German version. But if you
use the Premium or Power account you pay EUR 24,99 / month incl.
5 domains + EUR 9,60 (for setup onetime). Free email service and free
hotline + EUR 50,-- Coupon for Google Adwords. I don't recommend
the basic packages for business uses.
The US/Canada offer is a promotion and is similar to the the German
Power Package, but without the 10 domains.
All the best

can you have multiple domains as long as you stay within the 500mb of webspace.
Also someone said that you can sign up twice if you have two phone numbers, can anyone verify this?
Thanks for all the help,
John |

You can have up to 100 domains.... you just have 500MB of HD space, 5GB of bandwidth and 50 emails to work with (for all your domains combined). And 1 MySQL Database... (but that can be used by all 100 sites).
Two accounts... that sounds dangerous and sketchy. I would be careful doing that. You don't want to get bitten... or sued.
Technically, you can have multiple accounts if you have mutliple phone numbers... but if you read the license agreement, I think they only want one free account per person... _________________ Eric D. Burdo

1and1 has for me one big problem:
they only provide plain pop3/smtp access; no SSL access. If you have a laptop and log-in to an Access Point (via WLAN) to read your e-mail,
no only other WLANS can sniff your Mailbox user-ids and password, also the privat person who provides the access point may get these data.
This is almost like giving your e-mail password away into the public.
Very bad!!! |

I have my business domain registered with them, and use web forwarding to free space i have with my ISP. No down time and no troubles so far plus good VFM.
