Hi,

Please let me know if I understand subdomains in cpanel correctly or not.

OK I have mydomain in a root folder under the public_html folder. When I create subdomain.www.mydomain.com then a subdomain folder is created alongside the mydomain folder in the root of public_html is that correct? If so, what are the advantages of this? I don't see why it would be beneficial to have say a bunch of subdomain and mydomain folders side by side, especially if you have more than one mydomain folders with their own corresponding subdomains. I don't understand the uncluttered and organized logic there. Is there a way to create subdomains in a more organized arrangement, more like subfolders or not?

And if I create a subfolder for "www.mydomain.com" then it will be a folder in the root of mydomain folder, correct?

What are the advantages/disadvantages of subdomains vs subfolders?

Thank you

Think of subdomains as an organizational tool. If your business plan calls for a large site with topics that need to be divided up yet share the same domain then subdomains could be a good idea. There was a time when marketers would use them to add a keyword rich phrase or word to the main URL... this practice doesn't really make a difference anymore in Google or Yahoo... perhaps not even MSN since they recently updated.

If you have no need for subdomains then don't use them.

A subdomain (baseball) URL for a domain (sportsnut.com) will look like this: (These are just samples!)

http://baseball.sportsnut.com

A subfolder URL will look like this:

http://sportsnut.baseball.com

Personally, I like the fact that a subdomain lets me use any keyword I want at the front of my URL.

Whether this has any benefit for SEO or not, human visitors will see that keyword and know exactly what my site is about.

In this example, it's easy to set up logical subdomains that are related in some way... i.e., sports. You could have

http://basketball.sportsnut.com
http://soccer.sportsnut.com
http://bowling.sportsnut.com

You get the idea. And if subdomains are included with your main domain hosting service, those subdomains are free, right?

What's not to like?

The first example, http://baseball.sportsnut.com where baseball is a subdomain of sportsnut is correct. The second example, is not correct. The second example is an example of another subdomain. This time sportsnut is a subdomain of baseball.com .

lets say you own sportsnut.com . Your main domain would be:
http://sportsnut.com
and
http://www.sportsnut.com

If you want a subdomain on baseball, you could create a domain:
http://baseball.sportsnut.com

You could also create a subfolder. The url for a subfolder would look like:
http://www.sportsnut.com/baseball/

You CANNOT have a url:
http://sportsnut.baseball.com
as either a subdomain or a subfolder, because you do not own the domain baseball.com

One thing I like is to have my subdomain point to my subfolder. This way:
http://baseball.sportsnut.com
and
http://www.sportsnut.com/baseball/
point to the same thing.

Hope this helps.

The above example is used to great effect with about.com, I plan to put the same methods into effect with a large educational website I am developing in the near future.

I have a domain name http://www.thenewsnation.com/
Now If we make a subdomain then do we need to submit that subdomain url separately in goole and all search engines again? or our original url which is already submitted in search engines will do the job for our subdomain?

The last thing I heard about Google was that they didn't differential between your subdomains. Any links to your subdomains look like links to your main domain. This can be good for number of total links, but can be bad as far as Google's desire for your site to have a content theme. Lots of unrelated subdomains dilute your website's theme.
