Post subject: All MSN traffic vanished overnight!!!!

All,

This is a strange one. On Friday evening I recieved a call from someone stating he was calling from Syria and he had a very big business proposal for me. His english was not too good and he had a heavy accent, so I had a difficult time communicating with and understanding him. Long story short, he said he noticed my site was ranking very very highly in MSN and wanted to know something about SEO (again... could not quite understand him). It was late and since we could not communicate clearly I told him I was not interested in any buisiness proposals and ended the conversation.

Ok... so the next day I noticed my website traffic was reduced SIGNIFICANTLY! On typical weekdays I get about 350-400 uniques a day and weeknds about 250-300 uniques. My total stat count on Saturday was 45! Then again I checked today and for the entire day it was an all-time low of only 27!!!! So, I check MSN and search under the keywords that I was placed in the top 5 for and I AM NOT SHOWING UP ANYWHERE IN MSN! I mean... just Friday night I would be like #5 for a keyword phrase and now I can't even find my site in the top 100 under the same keyword! I kept track of my MSN traffic today and have gotten 0 hits from it all day (where as I was getting 90% of my traffic before).

Ok... so my question and concern is, can someone possibly do something to kill my rankings on MSN? I can not, for the life of me, understand how I could go from 350-400 uniques and top 5 placement on MSN one night and be at 0 uniques and not anywhere to be found the next! As an FYI, I only employ 100% white-hat SEO techniques and have a good background on SEO. So, nothing I am doing would jeopordize that (no cloaking, spamming, nothing). The timing of it is almost TOO coincidental as well. Can someone please help me on this?

I lost pretty much all my traffic and it's killing me since it makes NO sense! Please, any help would be greatly appreciated!

I doubt that someone could kill your rankings overnight. More likely, the same thing happened to you as happened to me a few months back with my Google rankings. I simply disappeared from Google overnight for no reason I could determine.

Rather than tweaking my pages to try to get my rankings back, I worked on building other sources of traffic so I wouldn't be so dependent on just one.

My exile from Google was short-lived. A couple of weeks later, my Google rankings reappeared stronger than ever just as mysteriously as they had vanished.

I figure it was just some temporary glitch in Google's system (pretty devestating to me while it was happening, though). It was a real lesson to me, though, in the need to foster multiple traffic sources instead of depending on just one.

My advice... sit tight. Try to get a few more inbound links. One day they love me the next day they don't. I've found MSN going through some things as of late with the rankings.

Just keep doing what you're doing and look for "other" traffic sources.

All the Best,

Hi Avalon,

Sorry to read what happened to you. It?s my (layman?s) opinion that it is sheer coincidence.

If you had not got that phone call, would you still put the ranking drop down to someone spiking your traffic?

As you know, the engines can be rather fickle, keep adding content and likely your rankings will come back.

Good luck.

I'm with Gary. My MSN rankings have been all over the place for the last month or so. I'll see high rankings one day and I'll be nowhere to be seen the next, without doing anything.

I don't know what they're up to, but I suspect the switch to the "Live Search" a few weeks ago has something to do with it.

MSN seems to value inbound links pretty highly. I would take one page that you were ranking well for previously and do some link building for it. Track it for a couple of weeks and see if some new inbound links drives it back up in the rankings.

Ok... thanks to everyone for the replies and putting my mind a little more at ease. I thought it was really odd the timing of it, but I feel better knowing that it's highly unlikely that the guy did anything to affect it. Actually... hmm... come to think of it, I registered my domain as Private after I got the call. For one, I didn't really feel comfortable with someone calling my house in the middle of the night on a Friday. Secondly, I felt it would make more sense to keep it private as no one really needs to know my home address and phone number. I wonder if that perhaps had something to do with MSN going whacky on me?

I think I'll do as suggested and hold tight. I'm curious to see what happens in antoher week. It was just a very big shock to me as the site is more relevant and high-quality than just about all the other sites in the top 10 for the niche. It's also optimized well on-page and has an "ok" starting in-bound link count so far. It's sad to see the traffic drop after seeing it go up and up and up every week since launhcing it. It's also frustrating to loose the income as I was getting a ton of Adsense clicks and started to make some affiliate income. Confused Anyway, thanks again for the replies! I'll monitor it and hope for the best!

Some people think that private domain registration can have a negative effect upon search engine "trust rank."

I have not tested it myself but it makes some sense.

What is an alternative? In the USA you can use a UPS Store mail box which gives you a street address to accept deliveries from UPS and FedEx, (or USPS PO Box which does not accept those deliveries). I use UPS Store. And I use a phone number from accessline .com, which only costs around US$8.95 a month. I use those two services and I never worry about clueless people and salesmen calling me or visiting me.

Just one idea to consider. Protects your privacy but also avoids looking (to the search engines) like you are hiding something.

I know that Yahoo removes links for some web sites and puts them back after a couple of weeks. From what I remeber they are cleaning house and if your page is still available they will put it back. MSN probably does the same thing. My guess is in a week or so you'll be back on.

Take John's advice and try to get a few more inbound links and then track it.

If it makes you feel any better - it's great to have these kind of things happen. It makes you step back and look at some things. Examine - where you can improve, and also make you look at diversifying the traffic sources.

If you go out and add a few more in bound links maybe you'll see a higher ranking or get more traffic to the page from another SE.

Those are the kind of problems I like.

All the Best,

I lost all my rankings the same way. MSN is unpredictable. It looks like SEO techniques apply to Google, but not to Yahoo and MSN. Even if they are easy to manipulate it?s even easier to lose your rankings and instead of your site, a new spammy site appears in the SERPs.

It looks like MSN gives boost to new sites, regularly updated, may be several links. Once your site gets mature, you lose top rankings.

But this is my oppinion only.

A piece of advice!

Quote:
Even if they are easy to manipulate

Lose that thought from your web vocabulary. You'll be disappointed all the time. Focus on the "right" factors for good ranking.

Good content - people want to read
Good content - webmasters want to link to
Good content - people want to share with others
Good content - structure for the best ROI - that include SE ranking

Your site is real estate. Add value and improve it's worth on the web!

What value does the SE's and other sites "lose" by not linking to you?

All the best

The company that can do that is called Microsoft. They have been making changes to their search.

hi avalon,

The same thing happened to one of my websites. I noticed that my traffic from MSN almost diminished. My site ranked #3 on page one for a couple keyword phrases and now my site is on page 4 and getting hardly any traffic. The weird thing is I haven't done anything differently and my Yahoo ranking went from #10 on page 1 to #1. I'm not too sure what msn is looking for.

My personal experience tells that MSN is the easiest engines to rank high and fluctuate a lot. I mean, new websites and even blogs can rank in the top 5 to 10 in matter of days. One of my blogs, rank no. 3 at MSN in one week. (Well, I updated the blog daily during that time, but I abandon it when it suddenly dissappeared from MSN's first 3 result pages.

The 2nd engines would be Google follow by Yahoo. They are more stable..Once you're rank high, and keep adding good contents and links to it, it's most likely that it will last for a long time..
