There has been much discussion about customers removing affiliate links etc. before ordering, therefore depriving affiliates of their commission, but this always assumes that customer in placing orders online.

How many customers are directed to the website of the merchant by an affiliate, decide to order, but do so by toll free telephone number, because they do not like ordering online, thereby depriving the referring affiliate of their commission?

It definitately happens, how often? No idea. But consider this, if the customer is squeamish about ordering online, then you wouldn't get the referral anyway.

Thanks Debs.

I guess the question in that case is how many customers are squeamish about ordering online do you think?

Or in broad terms, is it a significant percentage?

I suppose the followup question is whether it should influence our choise of affiliate programs to promote?

I assume that a high EPC on CJ must indicate that a good percentage of vistors are clicking through to order.

I think it has a lot to do with trust and credibility in your site, and the merchant site. Offer what you can, then make sure your merchant can convert successfully online.

Don't hesitate to mention that they are rated by BBB (Better Business Bureau here in the US is well known offline for trust and protecting the buyer), if they are, in fact, rated Smile Look for other features on the merchant site that will instill trust and confidence and weave those into your content prior to referral too.
