Great debate. I'm happy to be proved wrong here if that's how it turns out. I'm going off my experience with Alexa from 12+ months ago and it will be interesting to see how far they have progressed starting with the experiment on ranking.
Still don't trust them on privacy though. Or Google. Or anyone. Paranoia is a good travelling companion on the internet [cue sinister music] _________________ http://www.enterprisedigital.net |

I have heard about a lot of sites that have very high traffic with
a worse ranking in alexa than low traffic sites. I don't know if they
have tightened up on the cheats or not, but I do know in the past
I had a very bad ranking with Alexa, don't remember what it was
but probably in the millions. I started using them and set up my
homepage with Alexa, and got my rank down into the 30,000
range. And this site did not have a lot of traffic. I do not use their
numbers anyway to see how much traffic a site has. Myself I do
not think they are very accurate. |

I started a similar thread some time ago in the General Aff. Discussion.
Here are my figures after 5 weeks on the net:
900 visits.
600 unique visitors
3.500 page views.
That makes me incredibly "popular" on the net: I am ranked as 138.687 in Alexa, and outperforms most sites, it seems. I have only one word for it:
Nonsense.
I have barely started my work, having 10-15 link exchanges, and only my homepage is ranked (>30) in Google, three days ago.
However, I get subscribers, and some interest from my target audience (due to posting and a link from a prominent site to my free eBook). But is my ranking in Alexa a correct image of my popularity on the net? Not.
Debs pointed out in that earlier thread that many in the forum must have visited my site, and you are overcrowded with the Alexa toolbar. So am I. In addition, I made my site my startpage for IE. I think this ranking reflects that I am hugely popular in my home office.

The results are in!
The most used machine I installed Alexa on and set the home page to http://www.1stpresla.org/ improved it's rank from 4,799,736 to a nicely balanced 613,613. Average visitors/day went from 22 to just 26 from Dec to Jan.
The second test site (set as home page for a less frequently used machine) went from 2,080,561 to 930,592. Average visitors/day remained static from Dec to Jan.
Anyone wish to hypothesize? _________________ http://www.enterprisedigital.net |
